My male budgie wants to mate, but my female isn't ready. Why?

It is not recommended to breed your budgie too soon after having a clutch because this can deplete her calcium reserves. Separating her from the male would be the best way to prevent further breeding. If she has already mated with the male, adding a calcium supplement to her food or water may help her to restore her calcium levels.

They could be too young (or too old) to breed. A hen should because least one year old. A younger hen will likely be too inexperienced to mate and raise chicks. Make sure they aren't "arguing". This can be a sign of incompatibility. Provide at least 12 hours of natural or simulated sunlight to encourage mating.

Usually what you will see is behavior changes. Female ringnecks that are ready for breeding will crouch and tilt their heads back to entice males caged near them. When the male is introduced, even interested females can decide to chase the male around the cage and torment him for a short period of time. If the female does not calm down, try moving the pair to a cage neither of them has been in before. This would be neutral territory. Male birds are often injured during attempts of mating. Females are very aggressive toward their mates and can seriously injure them. It is best to supervise them at all times. Have you provided her with a nesting box? Females reach sexual maturity fairly early in life and can be bred as early as 1 year of age. However, this is not recommended. It is best to wait until they are at least 2 years old. It's not recommended to try breeding them before the age of one year. I'm not sure which parrots you have, but the vast majority of them the male and female look exactly the same, which means if you or the breeder have not done a DNA test, there is no way to know if you indeed have a female and a male.

There are certain things to remove that might decrease the likelihood of egg laying, such as no nesting material or nest boxes, adding a little stress as re-arranging the perches occasionally. It might be that they don't get along, or your female is being a bit territorial/jealous, especially if this is happening when you are interacting with them. Training one at a time in a separate area may help with any bullying. if you have any nesting material or nests in the cage, removing it may help some with territorial disputes. Placing fake plants, or even clothespins on perches can also add a barrier of 'separation" in smaller enclosures to help your male get away and be picked on less easily.
