My lovebird sneezes sometimes with no discharge. Should I worry?

Sneezing and wheezing are definitely cause for concern in birds, as they normally breathe through their nose (nares). It can be caused by bacterial and viral infections. It is important to have your bird seen by the vet to determine what is going on and begin the appropriate treatment soon, as the condition can spread to the air sacs and lungs if untreated.

An occasional itch and sneeze is not very concerning. Sometimes, they will have a long-term sinus infection after recovering from a respiratory disease. These infections are very difficult to diagnose and treat. At this time, it doesn't seem like he is having bad enough signs to warrant an investigation or treatment into this problem. If you are not noticing any nose discharge, and Jade is otherwise acting normal, then I think it's fine to not bring her into the vet right now. Although, it would be best to have a general exam done by an avian veterinarian at some point. Make sure that there is not something like perfumes/other scents, smoke, or excessive dust in the environment. Even the slightest amount of these aerosols can irritate their respiratory tract. Hi and thank you for this question, Please watch Emilio for a day or two more. If sneezing continues he might have an upper respiratory infection. Otherwise, if he behaves normally and stops sneezing then there is no need to do anything.

Respiratory discharge or secretions, difficulty breathing, quiet and lethargic are all indications of possible illness and should be check out by a veterinarian. Good luck.

If you've got them on any bedding such as pine shavings, it may be kicking up some dust and causing them to sneeze. Dust and pollen may also cause some minor sneezing in young birds. If they are otherwise eating and healthy, you may want to try a substrate change to see if the sneezing reduces. If they do start to have any discharge, or are not eating or drinking properly, then having them checked out from a vet for more serious illness is best.

It's possible Nova may have a bit of a respiratory infection going on. If the symptoms continue, the discharge is green or yellowish in color, or she shows other signs of illness, it is best to schedule a vet checkup. In the meantime, keeping her separated from any other birds to prevent the spread of illness, making sure her bedding and cage litter are not causing any dust that could be causing sneezing, and keeping her on a balanced diet with fresh water may help until you can get to the vet.
