My finch is molting and her wing is down. How to relieve discomfort?

If it grows in rotated, there is a chance this might be a persistent problem. Then a veterinary visit is recommended to diagnose the condition, which might include blood work, a nutrition discussion and possible follicle biopsy. Often times it is a one time problem, where the feather was tweaked in the follicle and grew in abnormal. Good luck.

Restlessness, picking or pecking at body parts, and holding a limb (whether it be wing or leg) in an abnormal way can all be signs of pain or discomfort. Sitting in a food bowl may be a sign Alex just isn't feeling well enough to perch or doesn't feel like she can balance safely without falling. Having Alex examined by a veterinarian who specializes in birds is a good step toward figuring out what is causing her pain. Your vet may recommend radiographs to see whether there is something going on that would explain her unusual behavior. In the meantime I would keep all of Alex's food and water bowls on the bottom of her cage and lower her perches to almost the bottom of the cage so she doesn't hurt herself if she has trouble balancing or grasping the perch. Make sure she has a balanced diet consisting of a pelleted diet, a fortified seed mix and small amount of fresh greens, fruits and vegetables. Provide a mineral block and/or cuttlebone. You can provide a birdbath or mist her with warm water a couple times a week to promote preening and healthy plumage.

First of all, you should seek an appointment with an experienced avian veterinarian. Nutritional deficiencies (calcium, protein, vitamin A, etc.) are only one of the possibilities. Diseases that affect the kidneys or liver, affect how the body assimilated proteins, and therefore feather growth. Quivering and shaking could be signs of being cold, but also tremors such as mild seizures. Once, again, you would do best by seeing an avian veterinarian as soon as possible. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out about your finch and including photos. You need to grab the fractured feather shaft with tweezers and slowly gently pull out the quill. Pull along the length of the feather. If continues to bleed, provide some direct pressure to the bleeding area. Good luck.

Concerns would be external parasites (feather mites?), aggression by another finch,or other problems. Monitor appetite. Molting time is different for each individual bird, so yes, molting is possible if it is that time for Sheephony. You may see new feathers, called pin feathers, growing in to replace the old if this is the case (they look like little pins sticking out of the skin, hence the name). Other potential causes of feather loss can include nutritional issues, parasites on the skin, infections, illness, etc, so if she seems otherwise unhealthy or ill, or you aren't seeing new feathers growing in, scheduling an exam with your vet is best. In some cases, birds will also pluck feathers if bored or stressed, so adding some enrichment and making sure Sheephony is kept in an area with low stress may help as well.
