My dove was shot in the crop. What emergency care does he need?

Try cleaning the wound with warm water with a moistened cotton tipped applicator, to remove debris, dirt and pus. This wound management is often for long term, weeks or more. There may be a mass in the crop or it could be severely impacted. Have him examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating birds. Hopefully, it will be something treatable. The vet can also assess the feathers to rule out infection or parasites. In the meantime, clean and sanitize the cage. Sanitize bowls, toys and perches. Discard anything that cannot be sanitized. Change the paper or substrate daily. Keep him warm and as stress free as possible until he sees the vet.

Skin part needs to be treated as it was infected. Disinfection with diluted betadine solution or salted water. Antibiotics may be needed as well, depending on the severity of it. Keeping him in a cage separate from other birds, with low perches and easy access to food and water may help, as well as keeping the area cool and dark to help avoid any undue stress until he can be seen by your vet.
