My cockatiel is underweight. How can I help her gain weight safely?

You should start with a CBC (complete blood count) to look for signs of infection, a serum biochemistry to check kidney/liver function, and possibly radiographs. You need to feed more than twice daily and improve the caloric intake, but food is not fixing the problem. Continue to heat support so Nibbles doesn't get cold and have to shiver to generate heat, thereby using up calories. Good luck.

Amoxicillin might help but is aimed at more gram positive bacteria such as staphylococcus or streptococcus, and not bacteria such as e coli or salmonella. Weight loss in birds has multiple causes (parasites, poor diet, GI disorders, etc.). Ideally, your bird should be physically examined by your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet to diagnose and treat any underlying medical causes. Blood work, x-rays and a fecal exam may be recommended.

It is hard to say, judging by the pictures alone, how much weight your bird has gained. I would recommend getting a gram scale so you can weigh her at least weekly to monitor her weight. The best thing you can do to keep her healthy is to offer her a high-quality pelleted bird food like Harrison‘s or Zupreme. Give her a small amount of fresh fruits and veggies, about 10% of her diet, and very few seeds/nuts. These offer a little nutritional value, have lots of fat and calories, and can cause issues with the liver later in life. I hope this helps. I am sorry your bird is not feeling well. Typically upper respiratory infections are not contagious however it will determine what is the cause. Some viruses and bacteria can be contagious to other birds but unlikely people. However if your bird is underweight it is important to get the bird to a vet for some blood work. Typically birds loose weight due to underlying disease like infection. I would make sure you always offer clean food and water. Hope that helps

If your cockatiel isn't seeming to thrive, isn't progressing like his siblings, or appears weak/sickly it is best to seek veterinary care. It is possible there is something making him ill or preventing him from growing, or he may be the "runt" of the clutch. An avian vet can check for illness and can recommend treatments such as additional feedings of baby bird formula to help him grow if he isn't getting enough.
