How often should I clean my bird's cage and change its bedding?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Hamsters like to have their food and bed in the same place. The area where Honey goes to the bathroom during the day should be spot cleaned daily and the bedding should be replaced weekly. I recommend leaving a small amount of the old bedding so that the scent from Honey is retained in the cage. I would clean and refill the water bottle and food bowl daily. A clean cage will result in a happy and healthy hamster. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Since you are adding an additional guinea pig to the cage, there will be two times the amount of urine and feces. Due to this, I would clean the cage and replace the bedding at least twice a week. Best of luck.

Hello. All birds should have fresh food and water changed every day. Clean the cage about once a week or more often as needed based on size of cage and mess produced. Tap water may be fine to give depending on your water source, so check with your municipality about that. If in doubt, offer bottled water. Feed about 65-75% complete pellets like ZuPreem or Roudybush, and the rest can be fresh veggies, some seed, and nuts. Have Tweety examined by an avian vet at least once a year for wellness, since catching problems early gives the best chance of successful treatment. Avian vets are listed at aav.org. Good luck!

If Zachary will allow, gently clean the feathers around his vent. A bath or misting a couple times a week may help keep him clean and promote healthy plumage. The change in diet may account for the issue. As long as he is behaving normally, monitor him and enjoy your new winged friend! Symptoms that would be of concern are lethargy, perching all fluffed up, decreased appetite, loose droppings or sitting at the bottom of the cage.

Small parrots should be fed a varied diet with a commercial pelleted diet being the base. A fortified seed diet can be offered in limited quantities to prevent obesity and finicky eating. Most fresh fruits and vegetables can be offered daily as well. Favorites are grapes, apple, cooked egg and pasta. Limit fruit to prevent loose droppings. The cage should be cleaned weekly, if not more frequently depending on how messy she is. Provide different sized perches to exercise her feet. Parrots are chewers so care must be taken that they don't chew wires or toxic plants. Provide plenty of bird safe chew toys and other toys to keep her engaged. Rotate them out to prevent boredom. Bathe or shower Hunter in warm water for at least 15 minutes. You can run the shower and let him play in there (supervised) to rinse him. Monitor for lethargy, difficulty breathing or decreased appetite in the next 24-48 hours. See your vet if necessary.

Frankly, I wouldn't worry about being subtle. If the cage needs cleaning, clean it. Make sure he has fresh water and food. If the bird responds to you interacting with it, do it. You can put a radio nearby and play music for him, sit nearby and talk to him, just to let him get used to you and give him some company. Re arrange the toys in his cage to offer him a change to his environment and stimulate his mind and perhaps some activity. If you feel the bird is being neglected and are inclined to do so, take over his care.
