Why did my chicken stop laying eggs after introducing new birds?

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female | 8.81849 lbs

This is my adult hen and she has been laying eggs for over 3 Months now. I recently added 4 New Chicken Birds and she hasnt layed an egg since past 3-4 days. Thanks in advance.

If you just added in new birds it's likely stressing your hen a bit which can disrupt laying. I would give her at least a week or two before I worry about the fact that she is not laying eggs regularly. Making sure she is on a balanced layer feed along with being given plenty of fresh water and enough nesting space (usually 2-3 birds MAX per nest box) can also help ensure she feels comfortable enough to lay.

Another possibility is that she is still laying but has moved her nest to somewhere else, especially if she is free-ranged. Searching for a hidden nest, and if found, keeping her cooped for a few days may help encourage her to begin using the nesting box again.

Hello. Chickens do need to adjust to new surroundings & any stress will cause them to stop laying for some time. Also keep in mind that not all chickens will lay an egg every day. They will generally lay several times a week, but not daily. If the hens are not confined, one or two may be laying elsewhere. I am always hunting eggs in the barn as my hens refused to lay in their hen house. Age can play a factor, too. A hen generally needs to be 5-8 months old before they start laying & usually slow down or stop around 5 years of age. Weather extremes can affect egg laying, too. So at this point, just have patience & hopefully your girls will start laying more regularly. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

This can be normal, especially if you are somewhere where it is still cold and not having a lot of daylight, or is very hot, as environmental stress can sometimes stop laying for a period. If there's been a change to your flock (adding birds, removing birds, etc) or a change to diet it can also take a few days for laying to resume. Very old and very young birds may also not lay regularly until their hormones even out (in the case of young birds). If the lack of laying continues, the comb or waddle become very pale (a sign of illness or anemia), or you see other signs of illness, a vet visit to rule out any health issues is best.

My hens just started laying, why are they laying fewer eggs?

Thanks for your question, and it sounds like you have quite the situation going on. With that severe of a drop in egg production, I would be concerned about severe stress, nutritional deficiency, or some kind of an environmental issue. I would recommend evaluating the husbandry to see if everything is ideal. If you have had any changes in diet, with a focus on a lack of calcium, that can cause a drop in egg production for many birds. Also, if you have had any stressful events, that also can cause a short term drop in egg production. From what I can find, the stress pack should not be harmful to your chickens, but ensure that adding it to their routine doesn't cause them to not want to ingest the food/water that it is added to. I hope that gives you a place to start, and that the egg production starts to turn around very soon.

If she is eating well and otherwise not looking in distress, then monitoring her is okay for a few days. Ensure her diet is adequate, to replace calcium that is being lost due to egg laying. Should I remove my bird's infertile eggs or will she lay more?

Leave them in the nest or nest box for a couple weeks, then remove one egg each week until they are gone. Removing them too soon or all at once may trigger more egg laying. You can also lower room temperature by a few degrees and limit her exposure to light. Shorten her days by using a cage cover in the early evening.

Why are only a few of my hen's incubated eggs hatching properly?

There could be a lot of factors at play- not all of the eggs may have been fertilized, they could have been cracked or broken while being sat on, or there may have been a genetic issue that kept the eggs from developing. It's very common and normal to not have all eggs from a clutch hatch and produce chicks. If you are consistently having issues, or the hen seems to have trouble properly laying, you can remove the eggs and incubate them yourself using an incubator that has a better chance of stable temperature and less breakage of eggs. Making sure you have a rooster that can cover all the hens, and that all hens are on a balanced layer diet can help ensure healthier, and better chances of fertile eggs as well.

What to do if my female budgie keeps laying eggs after her mate died?

My condolences on the loss of your male budgie. Do not throw the egg away without replacing it. This may spur her to lay more. You can replace the egg(s) with dummy eggs. Find them in the Avian section of the local Petco. Leave the dummy eggs in the nest box for 2-3 weeks, then remove one every few days until none remain. Hens will lay eggs regardless of whether or not they mate. To stop egg laying, limit exposure to daylight (use a cage cover or move them away from windows, light sources, etc.) and lower room temperature by a few degrees. To prevent mating, you will need to separate males from females.
