Why is my canary standing on one leg and closing its eyes to sleep?

Fluffing up is a sign of either being cold or not feeling well. so you may want to look for cold drafts near the cage (and move the cage to a draft free place) and if this does not work, take him to a bird vet for an exam. If Ringo eats, drinks, and behaves normally and is lively when he is not resting, then the room temperature may just be a bit cool for him, or it may just be his way of keeping warm when resting.

It is normal for birds to sleep or rest with one leg up. They don't do this all the time though. If she is behaving normally otherwise, she is probably fine. Monitor for decreased appetite or activity, loose droppings or sitting at the bottom of the cage.

A healthy happy and secure bird will usually sleep with one foot tucked up to his abdomen and his head turned around and tucked into his back feathers. I am not really able to imagine a bird with his leg and foot behind his head. It would be very helpful if you could upload a photo of your bird sleeping like this. If your bird is otherwise eating, drinking, has normal droppings and is preening himself properly, there should be no reason to worry.

That is how cockatiels normally sleep. They will also rest on one leg. There is no cause for concern at this positioning. A bird's body temperature is a bit higher than human body temp thus they will always feel warm to us. Monitor for lethargy, sitting with a wide stance and feathers fluffed out, decreased appetite or very loose droppings. These are all symptoms of illness.

I would not be overly worried since they are both doing it. It is not a "normal" behavior but if they seem otherwise OK then it is probably nothing. Monitor them closely for any signs of weakness or trouble breathing. That is the only time I have seen a bird lay down. Many birds, including budgies, will sleep with their heads nestled down over their backs and between their wings, especially at night. This is perfectly normal behavior. However, a bird that isn't feeling well will spend more time with its heads nestled down into its feathers and less time engaging in preening, eating, playing, and other normal activities. A sick bird may also stop vocalizing, sit puffed or fluffed up, sneeze or have discharge from their nares, have loose stools, have stools caked around the vent, and/or pick at its food or not eat at all. So, if your bird seems listless or is exhibiting any of the above symptoms, seek veterinary attention right away.

It could be that is just how your parrot fell asleep, which can be normal. If he is showing any signs of illness while awake, such as a head tilt then, refusal to eat, listless behavior, etc, then this is cause for concern and should be checked out by a vet.
