Why is my canary shedding feathers, not singing, and has scaly head?

Molting can last 6-12 weeks. Some canaries will complete a molt outside this time frame though. Increase proteins and fats to aid feather regrowth. Flax, niger and hemp seeds can be offered. Protein can be in the form of scrambled eggs or small crickets and mealworms. Bathe or mist with warm water to promote preening and healthy plumage. Providing full spectrum lighting, avoiding stress, limiting daylight to 8-10 hours and keeping room temperature between 68 F and 70 F will aid in molting.

Baby birds can lose feathers in what looks like a molt as their adult feathers come in. If she is molting, you will see new feathers, called pin feathers, sticking out of the skin (they look like little needles). If she is otherwise healthy and active and on a balanced diet I wouldn't be too concerned, however you did mention she is a bit lethargic. If she is losing feathers and isn't growing in new ones, and remains lethargic or begins to decrease her eating/drinking habits, have changes in stool, etc, then seeking out an exam in person is best to rule out any issues such as parasites, illness, nutrient issues, etc that could be causing her symptoms. Keeping her eating and drinking, warm, and away from any other birds that may pick on her if she is ill can also help until you can get to a vet.

Feather plucking is often associated with boredom, or other issues within their environment, but the cause of this problem is not always known and highly debated amongst avian experts. Making sure she is not bored is a good first step. One good way to keep your bird busy is by making them work for their food. Birds in the wild spend most of their time foraging for food. Instead of just putting food in their bowl, you can hide it, or put it in puzzle toys that require them to do some work to get the food out. I fed my parrot almost exclusively this way. Other enrichment options include putting a mirror in the cage and putting her in other environments. It's best to give your canary as much possible space that you can to let her fly and roam around. You may consider getting perches or other cages for different rooms, or outside. If you can afford to have a flight cage built, this would be even better. This is best achieved by keeping the bird in a dark room during sleep time. Birds should have 12 hours of sleep a night, so don't feel bad about putting her in a dark room for that amount of time. Diet is also very important. She should eat mostly a formulated pellet diet like zupreem. Make sure she is not eating a seed, or nut based diet as these are too fatty and can cause issues leading to feather loss. A mineral block and/or cuttlebone should also be placed in the cage. Keep the room at a steady temp and keep the cage away from strong drafts. You can mist him with warm water a few times weekly to promote preening and healthy plumage. Monitor for lethargy, decreased appetite and loose droppings. Poor Quiz. Nutritional deficiencies can cause issues with the feathers and beak, so if he's also having trouble eating, a vet visit wouldn't hurt to rule out any deficiencies or other issues that could be causing his problems. Making sure he's on a balanced diet can also help ensure he gets enough nutrition. Other snacks such as salad greens, apple slices, strawberries etc, are also easier for a budgie to eat and break down and can provide additional nutrition.

Hi there. Sorry that Sunny is having this issue. The normal annual molt occurs naturally during the last half of summer and continues into the fall. So, I would say this is the normal time of year to be molting. He may have pulled out a feather due to normal preening or it could be an injury. Can't really tell from the photo. I would not be worried unless you see any bald spots. Molting can be a taxing process. It is stressful for them so they do tend to stop signing and seem less active. That would be normal. The fraying at the edges of the feathers can be due to him overgrooming, but it may also be due to the feathers being on the body too long (basically a molting interval that is too long). When that happens, the feather can lose some of its strength and can be damaged more easily. These conditions are often a result of stress or nutrition. In budgies, the most common nutritional deficiency that results in this is a lack of vitamin A, which is typically found with seed diets. Ideally, budgies would eat a combination of at least 50% pellets, and the remaining 50% can be made of produce and a small amount of seeds. Vitamin A deficiency can also result in the skin being dry and flaky, and it can also look irritated or red. This may be contributing to the changes that you are seeing on the face and feet as well. Alternatively, there are some parasites that affect feathers and skin, however if this is the case you have caught it early. I would recommend considering a diet change if applicable, and a wellness evaluation for The Little with your veterinarian to get a thorough physical examination performed.
