My budgies are leaning forward on their perch. Are they sick?

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Male | unneutered | 1lb

Is leaning ,over almost lying down on their perch a sign of sickness in budgies? Grandpa has always has bad posture (hence the name), but my other bird, banana has started to do this too. They lean forward like their lying down. Are they sick?

Thanks for reaching out. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess. Not sure if this is an infectious problem, toxic exposure, nutritional problem or other, but a veterinarian and a good physical exam should be able to help.

Bubbles is very ill, but i couldn't tell you what is wrong based on these very general symptoms, you will need to take her to an avian vet where a blood test and faecal exam will be done to determine what is the cause of the disease before it can be treated.

Thanks for reaching out about Hammer and including a photo. This bird needs to see a veterinarian as soon as possible. Providing heat support in the 80-85 F can give some aid. Remove perches and place a soft towel on the bottom for comfort as perch requires energy to balance. Possibilities such as metabolic disorders, infections, ingested toxins, and other possibilities. Only a veterinarian can help with a diagnosis and treatment plan.

I would try to schedule an appointment with a vet that can see birds ASAP. In the meantime, keeping your bird in a separated hospital cage with low perches, plenty of food and water, and kept warm can help make them comfortable and may help.

Providing supplemental heat in the 80-85 F can give some support but is not in lieu of a veterinary visit. This could be a toxin ingestion (lead, zinc, plant), metabolic concern (liver, kidney), neoplasia (pineal tumors are fairly common in budgies), just to mention a few potentials. Fluffed feathers and dropped wings are suggestive of weakness or cold. Providing heat support in the 80-85 F range can give some support but is not a treatment in itself. Good luck.

Heavy metal toxicity (lead, zinc), metabolic disorders, ingested foreign bodies and infections are all possible. You need to see your veterinarian, to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. It is not possible to ascertain health through pictures but this act is usually performed by healthy individuals.
