Why is my bird sleeping excessively and only eating? Is she sick?

My bird is sleeping too much she is just sleeping and eating.....

Thanks for reaching out about your cockatiel. Lethargy and weakness are only general signs of illness. Possibilities range from metabolic problems (kidney, liver), infections, nutritional deficiencies, inhaled or ingested toxins, and more. A veterinary visit is needed to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. This sounds serious and should be dealt with today.

Thanks for reaching out about your cockatiel. If it sleeping a lot, it is probably ill and needs to see a veterinarian ASAP. Excessive sleeping is to concern energy. There can be multiple reasons from infections to metabolic disease (liver, kidney). Providing heat support in the 80-85 F range can give some support but is not a treatment. See a veterinarian today.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. It is hard to say for sure what is going on with your bird without seeing it. I would recommend having an exotic veterinarian take a look at him. I would have his blood tested and his poop checked as well.

Radhu is probably ill, but i couldn't tell you what is wrong based on these very general symptoms, you will need to take her to an avian vet where a blood test and faecal exam will be done to determine what is the cause of the disease before it can be treated.

Unfortunately, without an in-person exam, it would be impossible to say. Birds are extremely good at hiding illnesses, and by the time they do show symptoms, it's usually pretty serious. Thanks for reaching out about Coco. These clinical signs are not normal and a veterinary visit is recommended. Review diet and husbandry to correct any deficiencies, as low calcium, protein and some vitamins can cause weakness. Infections or metabolic disorders should also be on the differential list. Ideally, Pedro should be physically examined by a veterinarian. If an avian vet is not available, see the local veterinarian. He or she can contact an avian specialist by phone or online. Place him in his own cage or remove the chicken chicks. It isn't recommended to keep these two species caged together. Offer a mash made with warm water and a handfeeding formula to get him eating. Unflavored PediaLyte can be given via dropper if he will accept it. Keep him warm and as stress free as possible until he sees the doctor.

Why is my cockatiel throwing up, drinking excessively, and sleepy?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear that Baby is having trouble. Sounds like you need to take him to your veterinarian due to the behavior and clinical signs that you are describing. Your vet can perform a physical exam and then advise some tests to try to determine what is going on. They can run some quick tests in house such as a fecal wet mount and fecal smear to evaluate the organisms present. Birds can get something called AGY or Avian Gastric Yeast which can cause these types of problems. Also foreign bodies can be ingested even if the bird is caged constantly from toys, cage covers, etc. A cloacal swab can be obtained and sent out as well as bloodwork and x-rays. Once all of the tests are completed, a sound treatment plan can be put into place. So Sorry you are experiencing this problem with Baby. Good Luck

Thanks for reaching out about Izzy and including photos. Is there chance she is egg bound? Cloacal masses (eggs, foreign bodies, etc.), intestinal infections, metabolic disorders (liver, kidney) and other problems. Being sluggish is a general sign of illness and not anything specific. A veterinary visit is highly recommended as soon as possible, as this appears very serious. Providing supplemental heat in the 80-85 F range might give some comfort. Good luck.

My baby cockatiel sleeps a lot. Is she eating enough?

Baby birds can sleep a lot, however if you are concerned, you're not sure about her eating and drinking habits, or she is showing other signs of illness such as not being interested in activity, not gaining weight/growing at a normal pace, etc, then scheduling a vet visit would be best to rule out any health issues. It would be hard to say if anything is wrong without an examination in person.
