Why is my bird scratching its head, bathing, and losing its voice?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Male

Hi. My bird is plucking his feathers for a long time & now for the first time he stopped. I have tried everything there is. Now he is scratching his head against the Cage like its itching or irritated. He is also bathing like crazy. He opens his mouth like he wants to make noises but can't (before this he could speak). I keep his cage very clean & give him clean water everything. Please help.

Thanks for reaching out about Tiekie. Feather picking behavior can be a physical ailment or psychological. Loss of phonation (voice) is concerning as a possible tracheal foreign body (infection, seed, etc). and should be investigated by a veterinarian.
Check and correct any dietary deficiencies (birds need more than seed). Protein, vitamin A and calcium deficiencies can all lead to weak feather that break and fall out easier.
Good luck.
