Can a bird die from stress? How to help a lonely, stressed bird.

That is a lot of questions! And one I don't really have a good answer to. Sudden death can be caused by a number of things including illness, parasites, infections, nutritional issues, etc. It's always a good idea to first make sure the environment your birds are in is kept clean, and that they have access to a balanced diet and fresh water at all times. It is also a good idea to quarantine any new birds for a few days before introducing them to the other birds you own in order to prevent the spread of any illness. Stress from being put with strange birds, recently re-homed, switched to a new cage, etc can also cause a bird to act ill. Making sure they are in an environment that is free from harassment by other pets or people, is in a warm-draft free area, and that all birds can easily access food, water, perches and sleeping space is best. If you suspect one or more birds are ill it is best to separate them immediately into a hospital cage that is kept warm and with easy access to food and water to prevent the spread of illness and to keep any sick birds from being picked on. Seeking veterinary care to check for the cause of their illness is also a good idea.

I am very sorry to hear about your birdies. I believe that the human-animal bond is very real and very strong. While there is certainly no scientific evidence to suggest there is truth to what you have stated, I think that animals can experience a great deal of stress when they are away from the people they know. While I don't typically hear about people's pets dying when they are away, I suppose a great enough stressor could result in death, particularly birds who are very susceptible to stress induced illness. If you are dedicated to figuring out the official cause of death, a pathologist or experienced avian veterinarian may be able to perform an autopsy on Tico and Tina. If this is something you are considering, you should referigerate their remains until their point of delivery to the doctors. Do not freeze their remains as this will disturb testing.

Birds are extremely good at hiding illness, and if you suspect your other bird was ill at all, thoroughly cleaning the cage/shared dishes/etc can help prevent the spread of illness. Signs of illness to watch out for include listless behavior, sleeping all the time, fluffed feathers, difficulty breathing, changes in weight, appetite changes, drinking changes, feather loss, etc. If you do see these signs, or suspect Cameron may have caught something from your other bird, seeking out an exam in person is always best. Too many changes in a very short period of time: different room, different cages, different routine. The only answers are to try and mitigate stress: keep area quiet and maybe dim lights. So sorry to hear this! I suspect that the bird has suffered from a nasty haemorrhagic infection or possibly traumatic injury. Either of these could have occured to the respiratory tract, leading to coughing up blood, or the gastrointestinal system, leading to passing blood. It is impossible to know exactly what caused this without having the bird postmortemed. However, in terms of your other bird, I would thoroughly clean and disinfect the cage in case there are any traces of infection. Hopefully it was a one off incident and the other will be fine. If you do notice illness contact a vet immediately. They have a duty of care to all animals so will help you. I think the regurgitated seeds were likely just brought up due to death as opposed to an illness.

He may be stressed or injured. Without an exam, it is difficult to determine. Monitor it as best as you can. If he falls out of the tree, place him in a soft, padded box or cage until he recovers. You can also contact a local veterinarian and ask if they know of or work with a wildlife specialist that could examine, treat and eventually release the bird.
