My 26-day-old baby parrot sleeps all day. Should I be worried?

Baby birds can sleep a lot, however if you are concerned, you're not sure about her eating and drinking habits, or she is showing other signs of illness such as not being interested in activity, not gaining weight/growing at a normal pace, etc, then scheduling a vet visit would be best to rule out any health issues. It would be hard to say if anything is wrong without an examination in person.

It's possible your parrot may just be making chirpy/soothing sounds as a way to relax as he settles down to sleep, which can be normal. However if you suspect an internal injury from a fall, see signs of illness, or he is otherwise not acting normally it is best to seek veterinary care and a complete exam.

If Sky's behavior has changed recently, and you are are also noticing a change in stool consistency without a change in diet or environment, then having him examined by your vet is a good idea. Some environmental changes, such as extreme heat may cause a bird to be more lethargic until it cools down, however they should still otherwise be eating, drinking and moving about some. Diet changes can also change the color or consistency of stool if there are colored pellets or different seeds introduced. It may be that he is still mourning the loss of his friend, and so is less active, however being completely uninterested in activities, having a change in stool without a diet change, or sleeping all the time are not considered normal.

Young birds will often sleep in the position described. The shaking could be due to chill. baby birds need to be kept warm until they are totally feathered. The loose droppings could be due to parasites or infection. It is unfortunate you were sold such a young chick. A reputable breeder or store will not sell a chick that is not weaned and eating on its own. Without more information, such as species, it is difficult to give more specific advice. You may need to hand feed the chick to supplement the diet if it won't eat. If you have never done this, contact an experienced vet or breeder to show you how it is done. An exam with an experienced avian veterinarian would be recommended anyway since the chick is a "new" pet. An exam may confirm good health or it may diagnose any pre-existing conditions which can then be treated appropriately.

It could be that is just how your parrot fell asleep, which can be normal. If he is showing any signs of illness while awake, such as a head tilt then, refusal to eat, listless behavior, etc, then this is cause for concern and should be checked out by a vet.

An exam with your vet or an experienced avian vet is always recommended for new birds. At the very least, Phoebe will get a clean bill of health. The sleeping posture and squeaking noises are normal unless Phoebe is sleeping all the time. This doesn't seem to be the case by your description. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite or loose droppings. These are symptoms that should be addressed by a vet.

Thanks for reaching out about Marco. The lack of eating and sleeping more is an indication of illness. Free-roaming birds will often ingest items not meant for consumption and possibly toxic. There are other infectious diseases that might be possible also, transmitted from parents or other chicks (polyoma virus, Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease). A veterinary visit should be scheduled soon, as early recognition might improve outcome. Keeping Marco in a cage when not 100% supervised is highly recommended. At the present providing additional heat support might help a little. Most avian veterinarians try to place ill birds in heated incubators at 80-85 F. Good luck.
