Baby hummingbird looks weak and abandoned. Should I take it inside?

His best chances will be to stay with his parents. If you can see where the nest is, you may briefly pick him up to place him back in the nest. Most birds do not actually have a very good sense of smell, so your scent won't cause a problem - however, your presence will frighten the parents away. If you cannot return him to the nest, the best course of action depends on how old he is. If he's got feathers and can hop, he's probably a fledgeling who is learning to leave the nest and you should leave him alone. If he's just starting to get his feathers and seems bright (can lift his head and look around), make sure he's in a safe spot (you can make a little nest on the ground with a clean towel in a small box - but don't move him far from where you found him, so his parents can find him there too) and see if the parents come to feed him. If you're convinced he's on his own, or if he's too little to have any hope of surviving on the ground (even if the parents stop by to feed him), then I recommend finding your closest wildlife rehab location and calling to see if they'll take him. Thanks for reaching out about Sky. Mother birds sometime can reject babies due to stress or illness. Mother birds can sense the baby is ill or not worth the energy expenditure to raise. The baby might need to be removed or assisted in feeding, for it to survive. Providing heat support might give support but is not a cure. Good luck.

Sugar water is not sufficient to maintain long term, as amino acid solution, nectars are necessary for growth. Socializing with other hummingbirds is also necessary for survival in the wild. Also, first time parents can be confused on how to care for multiple chicks. Heat support is very important as the babies have not feathers and can not moderate internal body temperatures. If parents are still trying to care for the baby, maybe supplemental hand feeding could help. A local veterinarian with bird experience or a bird store can show you have to hand feed and provide rearing formula. It is very difficult for the inexperienced bird owner to hand rear birds successfully. Good luck.

It is best not to move a bird that has fallen from the nest especially if the mother is still caring for it (which you mentioned she is). If you know where the nest is, you can put the baby back into it for the night, or provide a bit of shelter around it for it to climb into so it doesn't get too cold.

You can hand raise baby birds if needed. It’s best to do as much reading as you can about the specific type of bird and what they eat. The parents will usually come back unless they have been injured. If you do end up taking the baby, she will likely be dehydrated so prepare a lightly sugared water to slowly syringe feed her. You will also need to keep her warm. Use either a red heat lamp or hot water bottle. Make sure it does not get too hot as a hatchling cannot move away from it if she gets too hot. As long as the parents are caring for the babies, I would leave them to do their own thing. I wouldn't move or touch the nest while the babies are still young. Once they're a bit older and moving about, you can then clean the nest, or clean it in between clutches. Having baby bird food and a syringe on hand is always a good idea in case you need to step in, notice they aren't thriving or growing well, or the parents aren't caring for them.
