My baby chick is cold despite a heat lamp. What should I do?

I would provide a heat lamp just to be on the safe side, and give the chicks a chance to move under or away from it as they see fit. This will help keep them warm enough at the low temp, but also allow them to get away if the heat lamp is too hot.

It sounds like your chick is very ill. Keeping it warm and forcing food and water (a mush of food mixed with water) in an eye dropper every few hours may help to get some nutrition in your chick. It is best to keep it separated from any other chicks to prevent further injury or spread of illness, and to keep contacting your vet to see if you can bring it in for additional care.

If this is a wild bird the best option would be to get it to a wildlife rehabilitator asap. If a pet species you need to know what species in order to feed approriately. You need a hand rearing formula suited to that species. Keep in a "nest" with supplemental heat and humidity as it cannot regulate body temperature yet. Relative humidity greater than 50% is required initially. Hatchlings (no feathers) should be maintained at 95° - 97°F (35° - 36°C). An incubator is usually recommended for hatchlings. As long as the parents are taking care of the hatchling themselves, you shouldn't need to do anything as they will keep it warm by laying with it in the nest, and feed it as needed. It also seems like you are feeding lots of nutrition-filled items to your birds as well! It is a good idea to have some baby bird food and a syringe on hand that you can mix up if you need to help with feeding, or if the parents aren't caring for it. Thanks for reaching out about Peach. Shaking can be from many reasons. Being too cold is one, most parrots are comfortable in 80-85 degree weather. They shiver to create heat. Covering the cage will not generate any additional heat, so a heat lamp should be provided. Shaking can also result from being sick. Once the chicks are dried and fluffed up, they can be moved to as brooder or to an area with a supplemental heat lamp. Keep them at about 95 F for the first week. Decrease by 5 F each week until the temperature is at 70 F.

Thanks for reaching out about Rico. Temperatures in the low 60s is too low for tropical species and supplemental heat needs to be provided, as their comfort zone is probably in the 80s. A full spectrum bulb with heat emitters, ceramic or infrared bulbs can be used. Young birds are even more susceptible to cold weather as are generally thinner and lack behaviors to increase insulation. Good luck.
