My African Grey's wings are bald and she's dropping feathers. Why?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female | 6 years old

My six year old African grey is dropping full size, undamaged grey feathers. She is not plucking, they just fall out as she flies about or potters around. The tops of both wings are going bald. Her behaviour is unchanged, still very chatty and active etc. She eats fruit, veg, parrot seeds and the odd digestive biscuit or chicken wing! Is this normal moulting or should I be worried and how can I get her bald patches to go?

I would recomend a vet visit as it is not normal molting for feathers to fall out without new feathers coming in to replace them. This could be caused by viruses, nutrition deficit or metabolic disease. The vet may recomend some bloodwork after performing a full exam and history. Once the cause is determined the approriate treatment can be started. Good luck with Misty!
