It has a very high variable dose range and each pet responds differently to it. You can always give 1/2 if you are nervous for the first dose to see how Lilly responds. If you see no change then you know you have to give the entire dose.

The dose range for Trazodone in dogs is very wide. For use as needed, published doses range from 2.2-14 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) of body weight per day. Based on her current 20 pound body weight, Luna has been prescribed 10.1 mg/kg, which is a perfectly acceptable dose. There are limited studies of the use in Trazodone in dogs, but it seems to be a very safe medication and anecdotal doses have been safely reported in excess of the published doses mentioned above. Since Luna is still a young, growing puppy, expect her dose to increase over time as she gets older and bigger. I hope this helps and that all goes well in managing Luna's separation anxiety!

Ultimately, this is a decision that really needs to be made by the prescribing veterinarian, as there may be good reasons for choosing one of these medications over the other for a particular patient. But in general, I can tell you that most veterinary behaviorists prefer SSRIs like fluoxetine over older TCAs like amytriptyline as a first-line choice for anxiety issues in cats because they tend to have fewer side effects and are better tolerated by most patients. I personally use fluoxetine frequently in both dogs and cats, and have not prescribed amirtiptyline in years. But again, your vet may have good reasons for whichever medication they recommend - just ask, and express your concerns if you have any so that the two of you can come to the best decision for Fiona :)

50 mg is a very typical, commonly-prescribed dose of trazodone for a dog of this size. I actually have a 20 lb dog who takes trazodone for separation anxiety, and this is the same dose that he takes :) As long as your vet has prescribed this dose of trazodone for Snickers, it should be just fine to give it to her as needed for storms.

I don't know of a specific medication for anxiety in treat form, but there are treats with supplements for anxiety, the one I used most of is called Compoaure. However your vet can use a compounding pharmacy to get Prozac in treat form as well as that is likely going to be more effective than a supplement.
