My dog, Tasha, has been diagnosed with Osteo-arthritis, in her left rear hip/top of leg. She is presently on pain and anti-inflammatory pills. (Apo-Tramadol - 100 mg. 2X/day.). I don't know if you are familiar with the medications I am mentioning,as
Metacam is similar to ibuprofen or naproxen and has both anti-inflammatory and pain relief properties. In general I feel like drugs in this class work better for arthritis than medications that only treat pain like tramadol. Each dog is different, and some dogs need multiple medications to relieve the pain associated with arthritis.

Hello. You can wean her off the pred onto the Metacam , or you can add additional pain medications such as tramadol or gabapentin. I, personally do not like long-term prednisone because of the possibility of side effects, but even Metacam can cause some issues. Regardless of what you & your veterinarian choose for Sydney, make sure periodic blood work is run to pick up any early signs of problems. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

For a large 5-1/2 yr. old dog, on Metacam tablets daily, for Osteo-arthritis, what is the expected life expectancy for her, on the Metacam? (She is 5-1/2 yrs. old.) Even with every 6 - 12 month blood exams? Will the Metacam shorten her life?

Hi there. My dachshund had to go to the vet this past Saturday because of an eye injury sustained at the groomer. The vet prescribed her metacam gir inflammation I'm guessing as well as eye drops. Metacam treatment was once a day with food 7kg dose.
Oral Metacam should be ideally stopped and as a first approach I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice lethargy or inappetence. Yes, it is safe to give gabapentin with Metacam and the joint supplement. Gabapentin is a drug that affects the nerves in the brain that are involved with the pain response. It can take up to three weeks before the body is used to the gabapentin and is not affected by drowsiness. The drowsiness is not something you have to worry about, it will go away. Be patient, it will take at least a week , up to three weeks.
