Most pet parents are familiar with topical or oral flea and tick preventives. So which is better for your pet—topical or oral?
Updated on November 13th, 2025
Because fleas are so problematic, flea prevention is essential! Commonly prescribed preventives include oral and topical medications—although injectable flea prevention is available, as well.

Either can be combined and given at any time with Frontline. They do make better, longer acting flea control pills such as Nexgard or Simparica that you give monthly or Bravecto that is given every 3 months

Yes you can give Capstar and Advantix at the appropriate dose simultaneously, if no other medications were given in the last 14 days at least. Revolution cover for heartworm so it is not necessary to cover Sophie with heartgard (and actually it is not indicated). Great question! Yes, you can give Chico Capstar. Follow it up with a spot on treatment like Revolution or Frontline. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. Best of luck.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I recommend that you try a product called Capstar which can help kill a lot of fleas at once. You can consider switching to another flea preventative product such as Bravecto or Frontline. In the meantime, your veterinarian can consider a medication such as prednisone or Apoquel to help with the itch for now. Good luck!

Yes, you can give Aries Capstar in addition to the topical Sentry medication. Be sure to continue applying topical flea prevention monthly in order to break the flea lifecycle. When he is due for the next dose of medication, I would recommend using a higher quality (both safer and more effective) flea preventative, such as Advantage, Revolution, or Bravecto. If you have any other dogs or cats in the house, be sure to treat all pets with good quality flea prevention. I hope this helps and that all goes well!
