Description

Oxbow Timothy Hay is the #1 veterinarian-recommended hay for rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and other small pets, trusted for its quality, nutrition, and consistency. Grown in the Western United States and hand-sorted for freshness, this long-strand grass hay provides the essential fiber small herbivores need as the foundation of a healthy daily diet. High in fiber yet naturally low in protein and calcium, Timothy Hay supports optimal digestive function and helps prevent obesity and urinary issues. The coarse texture promotes natural chewing, which aids dental wear and helps prevent overgrown teeth and other dental problems common in small animals. With its fresh, sweet aroma and appealing taste, Oxbow Timothy Hay encourages appetite and foraging, enriching your pet's environment while delivering vital nutrition. Timothy Hay is more than just food-it's an important source of enrichment.

  • - High-quality fiber source recommended by veterinarians for your rabbit, guinea pig, or chinchilla
  • - Helps your pet meet his specific nutritional requirements and keeps his digestive tract functioning properly
  • - The most popular type of grass hay for small pets
  • - Fresh fragrance encourages consumption

HORRIBLE QUALITY

Bunny Mum

The quality of Oxbow hay (every kind) has deteriorated horribly since 2023. I have found foreign objects in various bags (bale twine, thick white cord, unidentifiable hard woody stalks, and dried insects). Some bags are just packaged dust, no strand longer than three inches. Others are full of moldy seed heads and damp hay, as if the hay was rolled and packaged while wet. Other bags are full of wads of brown dead pieces of hay, or huge straw like pieces that a camel would have trouble eating. Then there are the bags full of sharp needle-like stems and seed heads so long that they caused my bunny to choke badly. It is deeply distressing as this an essential for a rabbit and it is becoming increasingly difficult to find healthy hay. What is happening at Oxbow?

Hate the new large packs of hay

I used to love this product, for starters it is no longer 50lbs it's 40lbs now for the same price. It used to be long pieces of hay lightly packed. Now it is 2 super super tightly packed bags that are so hard to get the hay. I have gotten so many small pieces of hay in my fingers. It is also super super pieces maybe 4 to 5 inches. It looks like what the hay normally looks like when my bunnies are done with it. I am very very disappointed with this hay now. I will be looking for a new brand to buy if they dont change the current product. Huge disappointed

Do NOT buy the 40 lb box!

Warning: The 40 lb box does NOT contain long cut hay. It came cut into tiny pieces that were practically dust. You also end up tearing it into even smaller pieces when you try to get it out of the bags because it is packed so tightly into 2 bags. I'm having trouble getting it out at all. It also doesn't have many of the seed tops that are our guinea pig's favorite part. This is NOT an adequate replacement for the 50 lb box that Oxbow used to sell. I'm surprised it even came from the same company. I'm EXTREMELY disappointed. AND they're charging even more for this than they charged for the 50 lb box. Shameful!

No, I do not recommend this product.

Quality Decrease

As of March 2026 I can say the quality has definitely dropped. I have made a few orders of 50lb and 40lb boxes on chewy and the hay is a lot shorter now then before. A lot more hay dust then there was before also. My pigs love this hay but if this doesn't change I will not continue to buy this product sadly.

Price for the amount is awesome so I was very excited but the entire box is just crumbs so I had ended up having to go out and get more hay anyways because my rabbit will pick out a few pueces and will not eat the rest

No, I do not recommend this product.

I've been buying this hay for 2 years but lately it's been a much lower quality than I'm used to. The bag is filled with dead brown hay with no nutritional value. I'm very disappointed with the quality and as soon as this bag is done I will purchase another brand from now on.

This hay has been absolutely TERRIBLE recently. A dusty chopped up mess of hay. There used to be a ton of seed heads in the bag and now it's just sad stringy hay and half a bag of dust.

Questions

1 - 6 of 6 Questions

How long dose the 50lb last two Guinea Pigs?

  1. Too long.   Buy a smaller amount because the hay will turn.   This hay is garbage and I hope that you did not buy it.   My rabbit would devour her hay up until I introduced this crap.   This hay is suitable for only bedding in my opinion.

What cutting is this?

  1. 2nd

I just purchased the 50 lbs box and I’m am wondering the best way to store it. I live in California and hope to go though it pretty fast I do have 4 bunnies. So what are the recommendations keep it in the box it comes in or store air tight ?

  1. I just keep it in the box it comes in and have had no issues. Just "close up" the inside plastic that it comes wrapped in so that it doesn't get too stale. It stays fresh for a very very long time.

Does anyone know the dimensions of the 9 pound hay bag? I don't know if I have room for nine pounds.

  1. The dimensions of the 9 pound bags are 8.5 x 24.02 x 15.98 inches. It's parked in there so not loose like 90oz bags.

50 lbs box dimensions?

  1. racingrabbits, Thank you for your question. The 50 LB box of Western Timothy Hay from Oxbow Animal Health measures 24 x 18 x 24.

Is the 9 lbs in a bag or box?

  1. it's in a bag
