What's the best affordable healthy cat food for indoor/outdoor cats? Dry or wet?

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I think the Purina Pro Plan diets are very good and also affordable. Both dry and wet diets are equally good in general especially for younger cats. I prefer wet food in older cats when I am concerned about kidney disease just to increase the water content in the diet. Good luck and have a great day!

Also, there is A LOT misleading and outright false information amongst various people in the community, which may make you feel like you're feeding an inadequate or dangerous food. Purina One is a good food that I have fed to pets in the past. I have no problem with it and would only suggest that you ensure the food is labeled for Greyson's life stage. Great question! Royal Canin has a dry food that is for cats with sensitive teeth, and I will put a link below for it. As for differences between brands, yes there are ones. Cheaper foods will not have as good quality ingredients as the most expensive brands of food, making the price lower. In addition, certain brands of food like Royal Canin and Hill's Science Diet have veterinary nutritionists on staff to ensure the food is formulated to meet the needs of the cat; not all cat food brands have this. Friskies is not one of the supermarket brands I recommend, I personally prefer Purina. Higher quality brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. Wellness, Weruva and Royal Canin are all good choices. When it comes to a canned food, look for one with a named protein source of animal (not plant) origin. Choose a food that comes from the can looking like a hockey puck. Avoid foods with gravies or sauces. These are typically higher in carbs which can predispose a cat to obesity. Avoid meat meals, by-products as well as store or discount brands. These latter two contain low quality ingredients and more fillers.

As a general rule of thumb, I tend to recommend Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan and Royal Canin diets. These companies thoroughly analyze the nutrient profiles of their foods, perform controlled clinical studies and source their ingredients well. As for Gracie's canned foods, consider microwaving the refrigerated portions for a few seconds to see if this may tempt him to eat any "leftovers".
