Hello sorry to hear about Norman. The behavioral changes, the weight loss, and unkempt coat are all signs of hyperthyroidism. If you are also seeing a ravenous appetite (hence the hunting) and increased drinking and urination they may also fit with hyperthyroidism. The only way to know is to test his blood and measure the levels of thyroid hormone. In the mean time, ensure he has adequate access to water and food until you are able to take him to your veterinarian. Hope this helps and best of luck!

The problem with feeding cats a homemade diet is that it is very difficult to get the correct balance of nutrients cats need. They are obligate carnivores, meaning they have to eat meat in order to survive, and their diet has to provide essential amino acids as their body cannot make them on it's own. I can put links below to websites that provide recipes for homemade diets for cats, and I would check that out if you want to try making a homemade diet for Orieo. I hope this helps! https://secure.balanceit.com https://www.petdiets.com

As long as you feed Sampson a normal, commercial cat food his diet is complete as the diets are fortified. Most people know that dogs can have oral fixations and chew/swallow things but they don’t know that cats can have this too! It’s unknown at this time why they want to eat things like plastic bags, hair ties or strings but as you found out, it can cause a serious problem. Some cats will out grow this behavior and some won’t. You definitely want to make sure to keep everything up and out of the way so Sampson can’t eat things. You can also ‘Sampson proof’ a room where he hangs out any time you are not directly supervising him. Also set aside at least 30 minutes a day to play with him. Build some shelves or get a cat tree with a hiding area on top to stimulant his brain. This may help to decrease the behavior (however unlikely to eliminate it). I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Hello. The cats & kittens offered at Petco are actually managed by individual rescue groups. Prices will differ from rescue to rescue. All cats can do well if they are played with & fussed over once you get home. Can they get into trouble & sometimes make a mess? Absolutely. If you do not want hair & dander & kitty litter tracked all over the house, you should not have a pet. Cats may need to have their claws trimmed ( NOT REMOVED ) & plenty of opportunities to exercise their claws, otherwise they will scratch your furniture, moldings & walls. You will need different types of scratching surfaces, plenty of toys, a water & food dish, litter box ( or 2 ), & lots of patience. All cats are individuals, so when you go looking to adopt a cat, take your family & give yourself plenty of time to spend with your potential pet, & ask lots of questions about them. Good luck & thanks for using Boop by Petco.

It is not unusual for cats to be extremely wary of visitors and defensive in their own territory, or to have favorites among family members. Pheromone products and calming diets can help but are unlikely to fundamentally change the behavior you describe
