It is best to provide Ava with a few different types of perches. They should range in diameter. Natural perches are best, as they provide varying shapes which is best for your bird’s feet. A pedicure perch is also recommended (ie: "sweet feet" perch) which is a textured perch that helps keep toenails trimmed and smooth, as well as the bird’s beak. You can find a plethora of perches on Amazon. ( https://www.amazon.com/natural-perches-Parakeets/s?k=natural+perches+for+Parakeets )

Thanks for reaching out about your cockatiel. There are concerns over sand perches as the abrasiveness can lead to minor dermal trauma, and then possible infection if standing on a perch with feces. Not recommended. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out about Beanie. Arthritis is fairly common in aging parrots, but also consider gout (another joint disease). Radiographs are best for identifying arthritis, blood work to assess renal function for the gout. Offering a broader perch (shelf) might improve climbing and perching. See your veterinarian for diagnosis and treatments. Good luck.

Preening toys are toys used to satisfy a bird's need to preen. They can be used to distract from excessive feather picking or simply to occupy a bird. They are made using rope strands, cotton strands, fabrics or paper.
