I bought this product a few days ago and not only did it not heat my tank, it keeps falling off the side on my glass 10 gallon tank. I also was very skeptical that this under the tank heating mat could only be used with substrate that is 1.5” when hermit crabs need 3” at least and that if any moisture touches the bottom of the glass if heating mat is on the bottom then the glass will fracture according to the directions. Why is it advertised this way? This product clearly shouldn’t be used for hermit crabs as an under the tank heater And furthermore shouldn’t be used at all because it falls off and it’s ineffective. I am done and will switch to a different brand.

I put this little heater on the outside of my glass terrarium for two hermit crabs, and I am so glad that I did. One of them stays on that side of the terrarium all of the time. He loves it. It warms the area nicely.

I just recently bought this. I am not understanding why people on here say not to use with plastic containers. On my manual it says use with plastic containers. It’s not made for wood or metal…. It’s made for the smaller cage. Mine sticks right on! Also perfect temp!

I opened the box only to find out that this can not be used on plastic enclosures (even though the picture on the box is the type of cage you get from the beach shops), glass enclosures only. Unfortunately I will have to return this because I don’t want to take the chance of it melting my more expensive plastic enclosure.

Not strong enough for a 5 gallon inclosure. It also says you can not use it with plastic or anything but glass on the instructions but its advertised on critter keepers which are plastic.

Keeps crabs warm, but it doesn’t stick well. I had to put the plastic cage against something to keep it on the cage

For the people saying it didnt heat it up enough, you have to stick it to the bottom of a 10 gallon tank. The substrate gets nice and warm.

You can place the Hermit crab heater on the side of your plastic enclosure and leave it plugged in all night. The Hermit crab heater is designed to be used as a 24 hour heat source if needed.

Would I need two of these to heat a 10 gallon glass tank? Everyone keeps commenting on how small the product is.

This heater is designed for use with a 5 gallon terrarium. If you are using a 10 gallon glass tank, the appropriate heater is the RH-4, Small Size Reptitherm Under Tank Heater. It is designed for use on 10 - 20 gallon tanks.

You likely will still need a heater. It also depends on the conditions of where you live, and if the weather is primarily warm. Are you using this tank for fish or for things like hermit crabs. Btw, getting sand from shore can be a bit risky, you never known was bacteria or things like mites may be in there.

how would you get heat a hermit crab cage?

I have 4 crabs and heat them with a 40W day bulb and a 40W night bulb. I bought a double bulb hood from petco and, at the appropriate time, simply switch one on and the other bulb off. In my 10 gallon tank with screen lid, the tank is a constant 85%. I also bought a reptifogger to regulate humidity.
