Please save yourself the trouble. Do NOT buy

I don’t write reviews often but I feel obligated to share my experience with others. At a glance, this kit looks great. All in one, ready to go. Seems great, honestly. Upon building it, it’s incredibly flimsy and cheaply made. Getting the cage to fit into the plastic bottom is a huge pain. That alone is a deal breaker given that you have to take it apart every time you want to clean the bedding. The wheel is LOUD. We had to move the cage to another room because we literally couldn’t sleep with the noise. The water holder comes with a flimsy little wire to mount it. Just awful all across the board. Like I said, it seems great because it has everything for you ready to go, but it’s actually complete junk. I found a great alternative at Petsmart for $20 more with a removable tray and it’s so much more heavy duty and convenient. Please save yourself the trouble and steer clear of this cage/kit. Your hamster deserves better

Way too small

I got this on sale instore for $14.00 and that's about what its worth. It is really tiny and way to small for a hamster. I would be fine for an alternate cage, or a travel cage but not as a main house. In the advice of my daughter I looked up how to make a hamster cage from a storage bin. I was able to make Mrs. Hamilton, my daughters named her, a large enclosure for under $20. I am debating returning this one, but I may just keep it as a safe place to keep her when we clean the large encloser.

Works for what I needed it to

Disclaimer: I bought this to use for introducing my two older rats to one I rescued. Have never had hamsters and don’t know how well it would work for them, but please, please, *please* never house rats in this long-term. It says it’s suitable for rats on the box but this is WAY too small for them. It might work as a travel cage and it’s been fine so far as an intro cage, but it is NOT suitable to be their main home. My primary issue with it is the doors. They’re super small, though that might work for hamster toys, but in addition they seem super easy for a smart animal (such as a rat) to open, and I feel like some super small hamsters might be able to get enough space to escape. I have a few lobster claws holding mine shut and it seems to be doing a fair job. Otherwise the cage seems better than some others I was looking at. The bars are sturdy enough to keep my girls in, and the spacing is super tight. One final complaint— half of the stuff that was listed on the box wasn’t actually inside. This is fine for me, since I didn’t need the bedding, water bottle, or chew sticks, but it *is* kind of disappointing. If you plan on buying this and actually *need* those supplies, please keep that in mind.

dont come whining

are you kidding me? this cage is probably smaller than an a4 piece of paper. dont come whining like "but hamsters are small creatures!!!so they should have small cages!!!!" no, thats animal abuse. how would you like it if you had to live in a pantry/storeroom/tiny closet? Would you be comfortable? doesnt matter if theres tubes you can attach or more than one level, they need more UNBROKEN FLOOR SPACE. this product is horrible.

Terrible starter kit. It’s way too small!

This cage is so small! Hamsters, gerbils, and mice need at least a forty gallon tank. I don’t know why this is a “starter” cage. It doesn’t matter what size your animal is, you should always buy the appropriate size cage for when it is an adult first, before you buy small tiny ones that you end up keeping the animal in forever to save money. I am sick of these small cages. Watch Erin’s Animals on YouTube to see what I am talking about.

Cheaply made and too small

The metal cage was supposed to interlock with the plastic base, but it did not. The cage was cheaply made. On the first day the hamster tried to bite his way out, a sign that the Cage is too small. Another gripe I have is that the internet price was $10 less than the store price. Really irritating.

can a hamster just SLEEP in here

  1. A hamster really shouldn't go in this cage ever, but especially not at night. Hamsters are nocturnal so putting them here at night is worse than doing it in the daytime. Please don't get this at all though because the hamster will not thrive at all, and they can get very stressed. I would encourage that you get a 40 gallon breeder tank for any hamster and do tons of research on everything. If you have any questions on hamster care, you should check out Victoria Raechel on YouTube. She has detailed hamster care on everything you need.

why do you sell such a small cage

  1. Hi dont come whining, We always recommend that you provide your hamster with the largest habitat possible. This habitat meets the minimum size requirements for hamsters. To ensure your hamster is happy and healthy, we also recommend providing an exercise wheel (included with this starter kit), exercise ball and even a playpen for out of habitat play time while supervised. Thanks,

is it possible to order another shelf for the cage? my little dwarf would really love another shelf to hangout on

  1. Hi nlevinsohn, Unfortunately these are not available for sale. Thanks,

Is this cage large enough for a dwarf hamster?

  1. NO WAY. It doesn't have room for a proper wheel or really any activity.

How do you remove the pop out to add tubing

  1. Hi Harm841, There is a ring that the cap is connected to at the top of the cage. The ring and cap will be removed together and then once they are off, remove the cap and replace it with the tube. Then pop the tube and ring back on. Thanks,

Can the any brand of tubes to expand this cage fit in the open slot? Or is there a specific type or brand we must get?

  1. Hi rooooseee When the product was developed, most if not all tubes sold in the US should have fit. Including CritterTrail, which was the most popular and still may be. It has been a few years since the item rolled out in its current form so we can’t be 100% sure but we would feel good noting the connector should still be good to fit most tubes. Thanks,

What is the bar spacing on this cage?

  1. Hi Bluejay1389, The spacing measures at 5/16” between the bars. Just slightly over a quarter inch. Thanks,

VERY IMPORTANT What does the spacing between bars measure? 1/4” or 1/2”? This is too small on its own for mice but connected to a large aquarium it’s perfect. mice love to explore, the more connected spaces the better.

What kind of bedding is it?

    1. Hi horselady2156, The bedding in the Kit is So Phresh Paper Bedding. Thanks,

    How big is the wheel?

    1. Hi horselady2156, The outside diameter is 6.5” and the inside is roughly 6.25”. Thanks
