As a new dog owner, I'm trying to figure out the best way to care for my dog. I was told to continue with the food she'd been getting so I went to PetSmart and there it was! I placed an order and it arrived first thing the next day. This is working!

No, I do not recommend this product.

Tasty but Potentially Lethal Heart Condition

I'll start with the good side of this food: It's affordable and our dog liked it. Alright, onto the bad: Our dog started presenting with a cough, bloating, and a resting breathing rate twice as fast as it should be. Took him to the vet, was deferred to an actual hospital. His heart is twice the size it should be, and he probably has a couple years left to live. Our dog is two. The vet says the food is almost certainly the cause of this as grain-free diets, as well as pea and lentil based diets (also present here), have been consistently linked to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). The food itself isn't a one for one direct cause, but if your dog has any predisposition it becomes a major risk. Sorry, I don't particularly like doing reviews like this, or reviews at all. But our dog (pit bull/German shepherd mix) should have an expected lifespan of 10-12 years. His expected life span is now 6. I don't want anyone else to go through that. A link to an FDA article on the matter: https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/outbreaks-and-advisories/fda-investigation-potential-link-between-certain-diets-and-canine-dilated-cardiomyopathy

Will this be a good one to switch to for chicken allergy? My boxer was on country vet naturals butcher block blend but everywhere is out of stock. Only 2 places have it.

  1. Yes This is what I switched my dogs to over 5 years ago  And have no issues

do you still carry wholehearted small breed beef pea

  1. Yes they do, it's on their website.

I am trying to order an automatic feeder and I need to know the kibble size for WholeHearted Grain Free All Life Stages Beef & Pea Formula Dry Dog Food, 40 lbs. Thanks!

  1. Hi ValThomas, Good day! The kibble size is about 12.5 x 5 mm Thanks,

Your saying 95% is USA made where does the other 5% come from??

Are the ingredients globally sourced ?

    1. I believe the only 100% USA sourced is Science Diet

Is this grain free dog food for Chihuahuas also

    1. They have a small breed option.

Why don't you answer the questions about the size of the kibble???  Why does it keep changing sizes???

    1. It only changes sizes when you order different sizes. Read the bag.

I buy the Wholehearted Beef and Pea..  I am wondering why the kibble keeps going from nuggets to little kibble and back again?  We prefer the nuggets...he seems to have an easier time chewing those than the teeny kibble.   Why does it keep changing???

    1. There are different life stages, but the packaging looks alike so you need to read the labels good. I normally purchase the nuggets and recently got the little kibble because I didn’t read that it was for puppy stage.

How many cups are in the 25lb bag?

    1. Hi Bree3, Approximately 100 cups (estimating 4 cups per lb of food) Thanks,

Why can't I find the Whole Hearted Dry Tuna Flakes any more? Will Petco start selling this product again?

    1. Hi Boomeez staff, We have dry tuna flakes available now (SKU 3149177). They are available online as well at: https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/wholehearted-tuna-flakes-protein-boosting-dry-cat-meal-topper Thanks,
