Oh my goodness I clicked on this because I thought it was going to be a cool foraging toy for my rat like the drawers they have on a different page. NOPE! This is not suitable for any animal, as an expansion or otherwise. This is too small, too cramped, and I don’t think any animal would enjoy being in this. Please do not buy this!!!

if your little guy can't use the stairs then cut up some of the soft sided strips of velcro and stick them on the steps.
if you're complaining about the mess then read the title. it is meant as an expansion not a cage by itself.

THE BEDDING POURS OUT THROUGH SEVERAL HOLES IN THE CAGE WALLS
EXPENSIVE
MESSY
HARD TO CLEAN HAVE TO TAKE OUT ALL LEVELS EACH TIME AND HARD TO PUT IN.
THE CUBES FALL OFF ALL THE TIME.

I was pretty excited when I got this from my dad for easter, but soon realized this is not what I thought it would be. I was planning to keep one of my gerbils in it until I saw how small the wheel was. I just decided to take it out. I had my gerbil in and she completely chewed up those plastic cubes. I soon took her out and placed my dwarf hamster in. She could not get up the stairs ( which my gerbil also chewed ) so I had to put in some of my old plastic toys to stack and help her get up. Every time I opened the cage to feed etc. she jumped out onto the floor and I had to quickly catch her ( she did not get hurt but she repetivley kept doing it ) Also when I opened it bedding came out onto the floor. It's pretty hard to clean too. So, I definetly do not reccomend.

Not good for dwarfs

I bought this product to connect to my cage as an additional play place. My hamster is a dwarf and she has yet to climb up the steps to the second floor, I seen her struggle but I assume it would work just fine for a teddy bear hamster. You cant use it as just a cage because you cant put bedding in it, however as a second cage to attach tubes too its just great as long as the hamster is bigger and smarter. I would recommend a normal cage instead :]

can the habitrail tubes connect with this item?
- I am a hamster owner myself and I don’t know what type a cage you have but you should have 40 gallons or more because it is best size for a hamster right now they are having a dollar per gallon sale if I were you I would get one it is safer and better for them

Can I use this for a rat??
- As a fellow rat owner, absolutely NOT. It is far too small for even young rats to live in happily. Not only the habitat itself, but the wheel/accessories as well. Plus, everything could be chewed in a matter weeks if you have chewers. (My ratties don't really chew plastic but I know some do). This is meant to be an addition to a hamster cage, not even a hamster's full cage. Hope this is helpful for future people wondering this as well :)

Would this cage work for escape artists?
- I wouldn't recommend it as the plastic is brittle and breaks easily, so you will probably end up rigging it anyway.

- Yes my gerbil has not escaped yet. He can't climb to the door on the top and if you lach the side caps on correctly he or she should not escape.
