A new low in mealworm purchases

Debrannette

I bought 1 container of 500-count and 1 container of 100-count extra small mealworms. In the 500-count container, there was one very large Super Worm, as well as 7 living and 4 dead Dermestid beetle larvae. Over half of the mealworms themselves were dead, and many of those were far beyond the extra-small size. The 100-count container thankfully didn't contain any surprise occupants, and the death rate was at a more reasonable ~10%. However, all of the worms were way past their extra-small size and were too big for the spiderlings I needed to feed. Out of 600 total mealworms, I ended up with just over 50 living small worms to feed 200 spiderlings.

No, I do not recommend this product.

I purchased a gecko from Petco in December and sadly, have encountered nothing but issues since buying these mealworm as I have purchased 100 count with 20 mealworm in it or them all being dead... it wasn't until I began counting that I realized what was happening... it seems to be an issue every time ...

No, I do not recommend this product.

We have bought a few from here and once they we out of stock so we turned to Amazon. Those were so awful in size and half were dead. We have never had an issue with these meal worms from Petco and they are always super well sized. We buy the giant listed size.

Yes, I recommend this product.

What is the substrate in the container of Imagitarium giant mealworms sold at PETCO? I have a student with Celiac Disease, so I need to know if any gluten may be in the substrate. The date on the container is 2/3/25.

Can I freeze some of them if my mice can't finish them all?

    1. Hi platies4life, Good day! If you freeze mealworms they will die. However, you can refrigerate them to slow down their metabolisms as you feed them to your animal. They will not last this way for months on end, however. Thanks

Can Towhees eat mealworms? Can mealworms crawl out of a dish? Are they bad for my garden? There's a family of towhees in my garden & one of the parents has injured foot & keeps begging for food. I want to give it something more nutritious than seed

    1. Hi Ruthanda, Good day! Yes, they can eat mealworms in a feeder. We suggest that you contact your local Pet Care Center's avian experts for complete advice. Thanks,

Can hermit crabs eat live mealworms?

    1. Hi Dino678; Good day! Yes, hermit crabs can eat live mealworms. However they should only be offered occasionally as a treat and not daily as their main food source. Thanks

    are they alive

    1. Hi JJMAX96, Good day! Yes, they are alive. Thanks,

are the mealworms treated with steriods so they don't reproduce?

    1. I have used them for many years, and have never heard this. If kept at simply room temp, they will turn into the beetles that they are youngsters for. If Petco does not sell a breeding station for them, you can either build one, or look online; easy to find. Hope I was of help, and take care.

Where do I get mealworm bedding?

    1. They don't really need the bedding. Buy "vita-bugs" from Petco, and they will come in a nice container. Just keep them at a low temperature, and give them a bit of food now and then - a slice of potato, apple, or other fruits should be fine. If you really want it and Petco does not sell it, just go online and type it in; you will find a number of places you can get it from. Hope I was of help. Good luck.

And the difference between Vita and regular mealworms is?

    1. Throughout a vitabugs life they are fed more nutritious concoctions of vitamins and proteins making them slightly better for your lizard than regular mealworms. If you actually go to the Timberline farm's website you will see that stats on the difference in protein ration etc.
