This monthly oral pet med is used as a combination heartworm preventive and intestinal wormer. Tri-Heart Plus kills the immature form of the heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis), which is transmitted by a mosquito. It is also used for the treatment and control of hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum, A. brasiliense, and Uncinaria stenocephala) and roundworms (ascarids - Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina).

  • - Tasty medicine used for both heartworm prevention and intestinal worming
  • - Economical heartworm medication with the same active ingredients as Heartgard Plus
  • - Give year round for complete protection
  • - Most dogs like the taste of Tri-Heart Plus and will accept the chewable tablet as a treat

Tri-Heart Plus must be administered monthly, preferably on the same date each month. If given seasonally, the first dose must be given within 30 days of the dog's first exposure to mosquitoes. The last dose must be given within 30 days after the dog's last exposure to mosquitoes. Most dogs like the taste of Tri-Heart Plus and will accept the chewable tablet as a treat. The chewable should be administered in a manner that encourages the dog to chew, rather than to swallow without chewing. Tri-Heart Plus Chewables may be broken into pieces and fed to dogs that normally swallow treats whole. Care should be taken that the dog consumes the complete dose, and treated animals should be observed for a few minutes after administration to ensure that part of the dose is not lost or rejected. If not entirely consumed, give another full-recommended dose as soon as possible.

It’s heartworm medication our dog has been on for years. We trust our vet as to its quality.

Does not work for roundworms

does not work

Tri-Heart Plus does not work for roundworms or hookworms. The box claims it does but our dog has tested positive for it on two separate occasions. Merck will not honor their guarantee to reimburse for fecal tests and treatment no matter how much evidence you send them. Sure it's cheaper than other brands, but you get what you pay for. And you'll wind up paying more in vet bills in the long run.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Did not help my dog. Is not a "microfilaricide"

Merck guarantees this as a preventative, but our dog tested positive for heartworm after being on Tri-Heart, and had microfilariae (baby heartworms) in her blood. Other preventatives also act to kill the heartworm in this stage, and could have significantly improved her treatment process. This product didn't help our dog at all. We had to switch to another preventative in addition to the heartworm treatment that we needed, and Merck didn't qualify us for their product's guarantee.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Questions

What is the difference between Tri-Heart and Heartgard? Besides the obvious price difference.

Up to how many 6 month packages can I get without them expiring? I'd like to buy 18 months worth of medicine (3 packages), to get free shipping. But will it expire? I have always gotten 1 years worth from the vet.

My new vet has their own pharmacy company. They will give written prescription, but will not authorize electronically through other  pharmacies, such as Petco.  Is there a way to submit written prescription?

      1. scan the prescription and attach to an email; fax

I have a script for Tri-Heart Plus. Can I scan and e-mail my prescription to you or fax it or do I have to mail it?

      1. Place your order and be sure to fill in your vet's name and phone number. Petco will call your vet to verify the script.

Approximate size and shape of tablets...nickel, dime etcetera? “Hard” chewable or “soft” chewable?  I’m trying  to determine if Tri-Heart Plus is the product we’ve used before. I believe it is, but would like to make sure.       Thanks for your help!

      1. About the size of a dime but thicker in the under 25 lb product. It’s a hard chewable.
