I didn’t keep the manufacturer’s instructions that came with our cat tree, which is about 2 1/2 years old, but I don’t remember any weight recommendations. I can tell you though, it is a very strong cat tree. The upright piece is 3/4” thick wood, the shelves are 5/8” wood and the pieces that support the shelves  (2 per shelf) are 1 1/4” wood.  The pieces are held together with screws. Because of the wooden box that serves as the cat condo on the bottom, this is also a very heavy and stable tree.  If you have lived with cats very long you are familiar with cat “zoomies.”  We have an upholstered wing-back chair next to this tree, and our cats have tipped that over a time or two tearing around chasing each other, but the cat tree hardly moves.  Out of curiosity, I placed some hand weights on one of the shelves, 44 pounds total, and I didn’t see any sagging or movement of that shelf.  Cats Luna and Ozzie also came to see what I was doing with their tree; another 8 and 12 pounds respectively.  I hope information helps. 

Some movement is normal, much like how a tree sways. However, make sure the support bar is tighten. You can also purchase a wall anchor kit from your local hardware store.

Approx inside box dimensions: 11" high, 17.75" deep, 13" across with a (one)9.5" cut out for the entrance. The lid with the pad on top of the box lifts off for easy cleaning. Each shelf is 23" x 7.75". The top lounge is 22.25 tip to tip, 19.75" deep. All levels come with replaceable carpet pads that attach with Velcro type fasteners.
