Do not buy online to pick up in the store! The store sold it online without actually having the product in stock.

Online image shows bottle that treats up to 500 gallons. Item they will send you or have in store has different name, cover, and states only treats up to 50 gallons. Shop carefully so you don’t waste time and money.

Please buy this if you need a quick cycle!

TL,DR: Cycled my 10 gallon tank in 72h. I've been fish-in cycling my 10 gallon tank for three weeks, and I was at my wit's end with a Nitrite spike (over 5 PPM) that has lasted for two of those weeks. My whole life was being affected by it, because of the huge guilt and anxiety of doing a fish-in cycle that seemed to be completely stalled in its second (and last) stage. I thought I had kickstarted the cycle by doing a 7-day treatment with Seachem Stability. I was wrong. Then I went for API QuickStart. No change. Next was Microbacter Start XLF. Nitrites still thriving. All of them miserably failed in creating a nitrobacter colony (one that transforms Nitrites to Nitrates). Last night, at 9 pm, I added one 3.38 fl oz bottle of Tetra SafeStart Plus to my tank. Today, at 12pm I'm getting 0.50 ppm nitrites. I hadn't seen a low reading like that in 14 days. SafeStart has done in 14 hours what every other product couldn't do in 14 days! Ammonia did not spike at all after I added the product (I had an established nitrosomonas colony already). Nitrates are around 30-40 ppm for now. According to product specifications, I shouldn't do a water change for at least 7 days, so let's hope it doesn't go far beyond that. According to Tetra, the efficacy of SafeStart is not ideal if it's mixed with Seachem Prime, so you must wait at least 24h after your last water change with Prime before starting SafeStart treatment. Already back to say that less than 72h since initial treatment, my tank is officially cycled. Miracle in a bottle. This product has saved my mental health. I can finally breathe. P.S.: Despite the crazy high Nitrite readings, my fish were fine (one Betta, six Harlequin Rasboras). Their behavior was never altered. I was doing 50 to 90% water changes DAILY, adding Prime (some times at double dose) and Aquarium Salt (which helps protects fish from Nitrite poisoning). The water changes never reduced the nitrites to less than 2ppm, though, so you can imagine how bad that spike was.

Fish Killer - don't buy!

I started a 10 gallon aquarium with three fish and an under gravel filter. The ammonia started creeping up, so I did water changes several times a day to keep it under control. Then I added a bio wheel filter, and the ammonia issues were much better; I was down to daily water changes. I decided to jump start the cycling after reading information about Safe Start Plus. I added a 3.38 fl oz bottle to my aquarium yesterday afternoon, and within 12 hours all three fish were dead. Customer service says I can apply for a refund for the purchase price of the SafeStart Plus per the instructions on the bottle; allow 6 to 8 weeks for processing. But they will do NOTHING about my dead fish. I am very disappointed. Adding SafeStart Plus is the ONLY change in my tank in the past 24 hours, so it has to be the cause. Don't risk your fish; cycle the old fashioned way!!

No, I do not recommend this product.

Questions

How much safestart should I add for a 1.7 gal aquarium?

  1. you will follow the directions on the bottle, but tetra safe start is beneficial bacteria that helps seed the tank so that it can cycle quicker so you really can't overdose it. Sadly tanks under 3.5gal almost never stabilize and truly cycle so you will need to keep on top of regular water changes to keep toxins at bay even with the addition of safe start. I would recommend upgrading to a 3.5gal or bigger tank asap - your fish will thank you :)

Do I need to use a water conditioner too?

  1. Both should be used on a regular basis. API Water Conditioner works well.

Can I add cherry shrimp shortly after treating the aquarium with this?

  1. I believe it should be safe I haven't lost any fish using it.

Is it ok to put fish in a fully cleaned tank just after adding in aqua safe and safe start only?

  1. You can, but only add one fish per 10 gallons of water to avoid a rapid spike in ammonia. Make sure you add within a few minutes as SafeStart Plus will start dying off rapidly if there is not a constant source of food. For more help, email petsupport@spectrumbrands.com.

Can I add my new fish the same day that I add this to a new tank?

  1. Yes, you would actually add this product to the water while your fish is floating in a bag in the tank, acclimating to your water. Floating allows the water in the bag to adjust to the temperature of the water in the tank. While this is going on, you should place a small amount of tank water in the bag every couple of minutes to help the fish to adjust to the water in the tank. Also add Tetra SafeStart Plus to the tank during this period. After 15 minutes or so, release the fish into a net over a bucket and place it gently in the bottom of the tank near a hiding place. SafeStart Plus will go to work immediately.

to set up ten gallon tank how much do I pour in?

  1. That depends on what size container you bought. The smallest one for up to 20 gallons would require you pour half of it into the tank after shaking it very thoroughly. The next size container would require 1/4 of the bottle, and our largest one, for up to 75 gallons would be around 1 tablespoon.

How much should i put in for a ten gallon tank? and i already have water conditioning and every thing in the tank and i was also wondering when i put it in, like should I put it in the water after I put in all the rocks and decorations or after?

  1. Set the tank up, and only add TSS Plus when you put the first fish into the tank. Add it while that fish is floating in its bag, becoming acclimated to the water temperature and chemistry.

To set up 6.5 tank, how much do I pour in?

  1. You will need 1/4 of a 1.69 oz container.
