HAS CHICKEN

Sensitive Shiba

My poor rescue shiba is highly allergic to chicken. We realized when trying bland diet of chicken and rice made his tummy and skin problems worse. Our vet prescribed food with hydrolyzed chicken and that didn't work either. We tried cooking him fish and rice, which thankfully, finally let him heal. The thing is, he really LOVES kibble, but the majority of recipes have poultry ingredients. We found TotW Ancient Stream while searching for poultry-free food that is grain inclusive. He seemed okay with adding this into his diet for about 1-2 weeks, but then the bloating and diarrhea came back full force. We went back to his bland fish diet for a bit, then tied adding a different brand of fish kibble and he's been healthy ever since. We were so confused about his reaction to TotW because the ingredients look benign! Now here in the Q&A, I see the company is admitting that this food actually DOES CONTAIN HYDROLYZED CHICKEN, but they aren't listing it in the ingredients and instead calling it "natural flavor." This is incredibly dangerous for pets with allergies. How is this not illegal?

No, I do not recommend this product.

We're so sorry to hear that your dog was sick; as pet parents ourselves, we understand how upsetting it can be to have a sick pet. The natural flavor ingredient terminology in all our recipes is determined by the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). Natural flavoring is an ingredient added for enhanced palatability and an extra-tasty meaty flavor in your pet's food. This ingredient is developed through a process that reduces the size of the protein molecules and is less likely to trigger allergies in pets. Our recipe contains chicken fat, which does not contain chicken protein, so dogs with chicken allergies are less likely to have a reaction to this ingredient. Was good, now every other bag is contaminated

Our dogs loved this brand for almost a year, and then got very sick (vomiting, bloody diarrhea). We had them tested and they had come into contact with clostridium perfringens. We took them off the dog food and used chicken and rice. When they got better we slowly re-introduced the dog food and the clostridium perfringens would come raging back. This has happend THREE TIMES now with three different bags (same variety) of food. We can't rely on this brand any more.

We have a full blooded Golden who was very prone to yeast infections. Our groomer recommended Taste of the wild and once we made the switch his yeast infection started to clear up and his coat was so shiny! We will keep using this brand because no other food as offered these results!

Our Pack Gives Ancient Stream Recipe 10/10 Paws Up

The Tanner Pack

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We’ve been feeding our pack of four Taste of the Wild for years. While we do rotate through the different proteins, the Ancient Stream Recipe seems to be a pack favorite. It’s tasty enough that we can use it for our training treats as well as their meals. That speaks volumes to how much they love it. Taste of the Wild is a brand we can trust when it comes to the health of our pups.

My dog is always excited for meal time!

WorkingDogRoo

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We recently made the switch to Taste of the Wild because of the high protein contents and unique flavors. We usually like to rotate formulas to prevent boredom but she's always gotten excited for mealtime with Taste of the Wild. Because Roo is a service dog, it's important to me that she's eating food that is good for her body. This food keeps her energy up, keeps her coat shiny, and her belly happy. The price is higher but you get what you pay for. The quality ingredients keep us coming back for more!

Is this manufactured in a gluten-free facility? I have three children who have celiac disease, so we need a dog food to keep our puppy healthy but that will also keep my kids healthy by not having gluten licked on their faces.

  1. Hello, thanks for contacting us. Our Ancient Stream Canine Recipe includes ingredients that contain gluten. Additionally, our recipes are not produced in a totally gluten-free facility.

How many grams in a cup?

  1. Hello, and thanks for reaching out! Each cup weighs approximately 115 grams.

Does your Ocean Fish Meal have halibut in it? My dog is allergic to halibut.

  1. Hello and thanks for reaching out! If your dog is allergic to halibut, we recommend avoiding foods with ocean fish meal, therefore our Ancient Mountain Canine Recipe could be a good option for your dog. Please know, we recommend consulting with your veterinarian to determine the best diet based on your dogs needs. If you have any additional questions or would like a personalized recipe recommendation for your dog, please contact us by visiting https://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/contact-us/.

Does the Ocean Fish Meal in this product contain halibut? My dog is allergic to halibut.

My 80# dog is 9 years old. I am looking for a non-chicken senior dog food with grains. Would this be appropriate for him? Or any other suggestions?

    1. Hello, thanks for reaching out! No, our Ancient Stream Canine Recipe does not contain chicken. It does include a natural flavor derived from hydrolyzed chicken. The protein is broken down into small particles that are less likely to be recognized by the immune system and shouldn't affect any allergies in your pet. If you have any additional questions or would like a personalized recipe recommendation, please contact us by visiting our website https://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/contact-us/.

There IS rice in the ingredients of this product, as listed on both the Petco website AND the Taste of the Wild website. It is 9th on the list, right after canola oil. Why? Please- rice is in EVERY dog food that isn't grain free- leave it out!

    1. Hello and thanks for reaching out to us with your concern. The ingredients for each of our recipes are carefully selected to meet the nutrient profile of the recipe. Brown rice is added to our Ancient Stream Canine Recipe and Ancient Mountain Canine Recipe as an additional source of fiber, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. If you’re looking for a grain-inclusive recipe without brown rice, we recommend checking out our Ancient Prairie Recipe or Ancient Wetlands Recipe. Please know, our foods are developed using our proprietary formulation technology and a team of experts and scientists incorporating the latest research from many disciplines: veterinary medicine (DVMs), pet food nutrition (PhD), food microbiology (PhD), as well as food production and food science.

Why add rice when it already contains barley, sorghum & millet? Dogs need grains, but many have developed a sensitivity to the most overused grain- rice. This was SO close to being perfect; the ONLY one! Please help- reconsider ingredients!

With the Pacific stream why not take out the peas and lentils or peas and 1 potatoes so that we can continue to feed this two our dogs instead of making up a whole new Ancient Grains variety

      1. Hello and thanks for your question. We listen to our pet parents’ requests, which is why we created all-new Ancient Grains recipes that reflect our classic Taste of the Wild flavors. Ancient Grains recipes are a good fit for those looking for a dog food including grains. Please know, peas, legumes, lentils and potatoes are included in Pacific Stream because they are a great source of protein, fiber and antioxidants, and they help to make our recipes complete and balanced. To date, the FDA still has not found any science-based causes to link grain-free diets, peas, legumes, lentils and potatoes to DCM, therefore we are not planning to remove these ingredients until a science-based link is discovered. If you have any questions, please contact us at 1-800-342-4808 (8 a.m. - 5 p.m. CT weekdays).
