My hamster escaped, but everything else is fine. It's hard to clean. My hamster nests in the wheel and not the nesting spot. 5

Do not buy! Hamster escaped twice in 2 weeks

My children reviewed this last week and we were not able to edit/update. The hamster escaped again due to poor design/build of the cage accessories. If we could give zero stars, we would. The tubes are very tricky to get locked into their slots and the exercise wheel extension does not lock into place. You need to place it in the hole and twist, but when the hamster is using the wheel, it can untwist the mechanism, causing the tube to fall off, which has led to it's escape twice. I'm frustrated that Petco is still selling this product, considering some of the other reviews we've read. Unfortunately, we didn't read the reviews until after we had the first escape. We (wrongfully) assumed that the store would be selling items that are safe for the animals they are selling. Now we need to spend more $$$ to keep our hamster safe.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Not Fit for any Hamster, here’s why.

Do NOT buy this cage for your hamster (or any animal) unless you’re only using it as a travel cage! Please, do research before getting a hamster (or an animal of any sort), they’re not toys! Reasons: 1. It’s way too small, especially for Syrian Hamsters. They need at least 450 square inches of unbroken floor space. Putting a hamster in a cage this size is the human equivalent to trapping somebody in a closet lol 2. The wheel is way too small, and can cause back injuries in hamsters. 3. It’s overpriced, especially for what you get. It’s cheap plastic that animals can chew through easily, and it’s tough to clean as well. A way better option for a hamster cage is a ā€˜bin cage’, which is much cheaper, easier to keep clean, a lot more room for the hamster, and easily customizable! You can easily buy a 110 qt clear bin instead of this. [If you need a tutorial on how to make a bin cage, search ā€˜DIY Hamster Bin Cage’ :) It’s not complicated to make, I promise, lol] 4. It’s not deep enough to add the minimum amount of bedding. Hamsters need a lot of bedding in order to burrow (at least 5+ inches deep). Please keep these points in mind, and don’t buy cages like these for your hamster. P.S. If your hamster is currently living in one of these, it’s okay, everyone makes mistakes, I used to have my hamster in a too-small cage until I learned about proper care, and upgraded my hamster’s enclosure. As long as you learn from your mistakes and upgrade your hamster’s cage, it’s okay :)

No, I do not recommend this product.

Mediocre at best, but cool looking cage.

Bought the cage in March 2024. It looks cool, but is overpriced and a lot of the pieces do line up or snap in tight. The water bottle hole was put in the incorrect spot. So if I have the doors in the correct position, then the water bottle hole is at the very top of the cage where the hamster can’t reach. If I flip it over the water bottle hole is now within reach for the hamster, but all of the doors are upside down.the cage is still usable and looks cool but just a lot of little things that aren’t the way they are supposed to be.

Not good for ANY species of hamsters

Hammy Mom2

Purchased this for my two Russian Hybrid dwarf hamsters as recommended by store employee. After my two girls got in a fight 3 days after bringing them home, which could of killed one I did my research and found this "cage" doesn't meet the minimum square inches for any type of hamster enclosures. Dwarf & Ribo's require 400 square inches which is equivalent to a 40 gallon breeder tank, and NOT housed together. Syrian aka Teddy Bears require 600sq inches = 75 gallon tank. I purchased two 40 gallon breeder tanks at Petsmart, got a wire mesh lid from the reptile section, and order their 12 inch quiet wheel. Hamsters of any breed need 6-10 inches of bedding bc in the wild they burrow as they're prey animals. There is NO way their basic needs are met in this tiny cage. The only thing it would be OK for is enclosure cleaning, emergencies, and vet visits.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Questions

My question is when are you going to stop selling these small cages? This is so bad and why can't you guys sell the right size the minimum is 450 square inches or 40 gallon but is recommended way more. You don't even have the room for enough bedding.

  1. We are passionate about small animals & strive to provide the highest quality products including habitats, accessories, and more. We'd love to hear your ideas on how to improve our product. Give our Consumer Care team a call at 1-800-529-8331

How many hamster tubes does this come with? Does it just come with the one in the picture, or does it come with more?

  1. Hey there! Yes, it only comes with what's in the box. However, additional tubes can be purchased to connect to other habitats.

Is this a good starter for mouse

  1. Hmm. Would this be good for mice? Mice don't get stressed by small enclosures like hamsters do (that's what the person who answered before me said, and that is untrue) but they need constant stimulation, which is why I'd recommend two or three crittertrails connected. Unlike hamsters, mice are satisfied by many small areas connected as they prefer small spaces to large, wide open ones. For a starter, if you want you can get two and the necessary tubes to connect them. To save money, you could also make a small bin cage and attach it to the crittertrail (I did this). In my personal opinion, mice are the only animal that crittertrails could safely be marketed to, and the reason that they are hated on so much is because they are generally thought of as just "hamster cages". And as hamster cages, they are incredibly ineffective. But for mice? They're pretty perfect.

We have had this pet cage for almost 6 months and the wheel is starting to squeak very loudly. Can this be fixed? Not sure, since it's plastic. Or is it possible to just purchase a replacement wheel?

  1. get ur hamster a new cage this one is way to small. Hamsters need atleast 450 sq in

is it possible to take the top wheel off and replace it with a lookout?

  1. No. I'm afraid you can't. You could attach a lookout using more tubes though!

Water bottle will NOT stop dripping the entire contents out every time we fill it! HELLLLLP!!!

  1. Oh no! Please reach out to the Kaytee Consumer Care team at 1-800-529-8331. We want to help you out!

I already have this cage. My gerbil will not go up the slide or any of the tubes. Can I remove the slide and top wheel and add an excercise wheel and hideout in the bottom? Ā

  1. We think that your gerbil will eventually go up the slide. While it will be tight on space to do as you noted, you certainly can try that. Make sure to not get a large exercise wheel. Please call the Kaytee Team at 888-255-4527 if you have any other questions.

What are the dimensions of this item?

  1. Hi there! It's always good to know the dimensions of a cage before getting it. This cage is WAY too small for any animal, as hamsters (and gerbils and mice, too) need a bare minimum of 450 sq. inches of unbroken floor space, and this cage only comes to 148 sq. inches.

can a female dwarf hamster escape from this cage?

  1. Yes she will. My syrian hamster has escaped twice from this very cage and hamsters are escape artists. You'll have to Jerry rig all connections to make sure they stay on and also tape the lid to the petting zone shut.

is this cage safe for a syrain hamster

  1. No. Syrians are the most difficult to please and when they aren't getting their ways they will let their dissatisfaction known. Too small of a cage (like this one that is under the square inch recommendation of 450 square inches) will cause your syrian to become stressed after a week of being in this cage
