Lesson learned: Crystal litter forever

Paula

The chunky is less trackable and a lot less dusty than the fine crystal litter. We stopped using crystal litter for a time because it seemed expensive. We switched to clumping clay litter, but because you scoop out the lumps, we ended up having to add more litter to the box so often that it worked out to almost the same or more $$ for the clay. On top of that, we realized the cat pee smell was permeating our home because clay doesn't dry out like the crystal litter.

Yes, I recommend this product.

I've been using it for about a month, and 2 stars is only for smell locking, it's pretty good. It isn't dust free, it's actually EXTREMELY dusty. It's not economical, because I used almost the whole bag

No, I do not recommend this product.

I have noticed a change in this product in the last year. It became much more fine and kicking up a lot of dust in the air. Has anyone else noticed this and has anyone asked Petco what is happening? Are they trying to introduce a more expensive product?

  1. I have notcied the same and switched back to clay :(

Does this product clump like the pink & blue stuff in the 8lb bags does?

  1. No. It works much better than the tiny crystals.

Will this be harmful for my kitten if ingested?? I keep catching her playing with a few pieces that fall out of the litter box (we rescued her from the street so she's very open to sticking everything in her mouth" I will switch litters if she continues.

  1. Although the litter is nontoxic, it shouldn’t be eaten. You know those little packets that come in some food products to keep moisture to a minimum; the ones that say “do not eat?” That’s the same stuff as this litter, just on a smaller scale. A little bit can cause upset stomach, a lot can cause GI blockage. It absorbs up to 40 times it’s weight in water, but that’s only if it’s not already completely saturated when you get it.

What is this litter made from?

  1. You may already have researched the Petco site to find this: "So Phresh Scoopable Odor-Lock Clumping Micro Crystal Cat Litter unique. It is made from ultra-fine silica gel crystals in a lightweight formula that absorbs odors as well as liquid."I've used it for years and love it. Wouldn't use anything else.

How often does the manufacturer recommend changing the litter? I have 2 cats and 3 litter boxes.

  1. I have 3 cats and 2 litter boxes. I scoop boxes frequently and change them every other week. I really like the sophresh, it keeps the odor down better than other litters I've tried.

We have 5 cats and 4 boxes. We just starting using this product, but am not sure how often it should be completely changed out. Any advice?

  1. We have a room with 4-5 cats (2 in and out of the room) and 2 xl litter boxes. We have another XL litter box in the rest of the house for 3 cats (2 in and out of the room) and 1 large litter box in the bedroom for 2 cats (1 in and out of the room). We began using the crystal litter when we moved into our new home 6 weeks ago and we're still playing with how long we go before changing it out. We scoop 2 times a day only the poop. I think we should do it every 10 days but I prefer to change them out on the weekend so we've been going every 2 weeks, which seems to work well as long as there is plenty of litter in the boxes. Some times toward the end of the 2 weeks, I'll scoop the pee where it's very yellow bc my cats tend to pee in the same place inside the box.

Is this litter artificially colored like some of the others? I'm a big fan of crystal litter, but there's no need for added dyes in litters. Would like to give this a shot if there is an uncolored formula.

  1. The color is not natural. My guess is that they do it to make it look like more expensive color-indicating silica gel. This is an industrial product not originally intended for this purpose but purchased cheap, packaged agreeably and sold for a price indicative of higher quality.

what does it mean when the crystals turn green

  1. It means the blue-colored crystals have adsorbed (yes, aDsorbed, not absorbed) as much yellow urine as they can, turning green.

I understand that some Silica is dangerous to cats. Can you tell me about what kind of Silica is used in this product and does Petco guarantee its safety? Thank you

  1. Hi Larry2012, The main ingredient is sodium silicate, it is non-toxic. Thanks,

What size are the crystals? I am looking for micro crystals. I don't like the big ones they get scooped out too much.

  1. Hi HGWells, Our spec for the So Phresh Silica Cat Litter Crystals is 1-8 mm. To get a consistent smaller spec, We would recommend to try the 8 lb So Phresh Clumping Silica.
