Good for my Cat's Health

Feline Good

My cat loves this food, and it's expensive, BUT after about 10 days on this food my cat stopped throwing up which made the price worth it!! I had been learning about all the awful, disgusting ingredients in most cat food out there. So basically you have to pay much more to get decent quality food for our pets. Sure is cheaper and easier than expensive Vet bills. I'm fortunate my Vet prescribed exactly the right food my darling needed to get well and gain back the weight she lost from throwing up 5 times a week. So there was no trial and error involved. This food helped her heal and get back on track. My cat is starting to act healthy again, although she's always begging for more of this food. Happy that she's getting some of her tummy fat back, but still a way to go yet. All I can say is that the food she was eating must have been poor quality and over time, it started making her sick. It's a major, popular brand in the mid-price range. A lot of cats will eventually get sick from it like mine did. I am sold on this Rx food. The ingredients simple and rabbit is what she's eat in the wild. Feeling lucky to have my cat on this food now.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Worth trying it!

Myb16yo has lived with IBD for many yes and has recently been diagnosed with pancreatitis. We have switched to this food for now and he is putting weight back on and not vomiting. I recommend trying it if you have a cat with same/similar health issues. We heat it up.for him if it has been refrigerated as he eats it twice a day and that helps. It hasn't stopped his diarrhea but it's slowed it down and he isn't in pain.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Select Protein: quality is decreasing

I have a 19-year-old cat who suffers from pancreatitis. I am grateful that there is a line of food he can eat that does not send his pancreas into an uproar. That is the complete extent of positive things I have to say about this food. If I wasn't 100% dependent on this line of foods to (basically) keep my cat alive and sometimes thriving I would never buy food from this company again. As far as this PARTICULAR food goes, compared to the other "select proteins" it is more disgusting. The texture is watery, the "gel" is a funny orange color and doesn't actually gel when you refrigerate leftovers. My cat dislikes this food to an extent that his health is at risk from not eating enough. If you are considering buying this food, here are some other things you must know: 1. At some point, your food WILL go out of stock and become unattainable, at which point you will need to (possibly VERY ABRUPTLY) transition your pet to "something else." "Something else" that he might or might not be willing to eat. "Something else" that might or might not be good for him in terms of controlling his symptoms. In the case of an elderly animal with medical conditions, he might or might not rebound. The company doesn't care about your pets' problems related to this. This will be extremely stressful and possibly heartbreaking. This happens fairly regularly. Prepare yourself. That is how my cat has ended up stuck with this food that, frankly, disgusts both of us. 2. This company keeps reformulating their diets using lower quality (cheaper) ingredients, and the food itself absolutely reflects that. When I first started buying Select Protein food, when I opened the can it smelled delicious, like something I would eat myself. Now this line of food is indistinguishable from cheapest brand of canned food you can buy in the supermarket. I keep checking the label to make sure they didn't accidentally send me just regular cat food intended for healthy cats. I keep wondering if they mistakenly put a "select protein" label on supermarket cat food. Based on the fact that my cat's vomiting is (mostly) controlled, I guess they did not, but really there's no way to know other than just trusting the company. Are they really trustworthy? I don't know. When they reformulate, they won't give you warning about the formulation change. If you are stockpiling/hoarding the food due to experiencing what I wrote above (#1), you may not realize the formulation has changed until you abruptly find yourself needing to do a food transition and don't have many cans to do it with. You may also find that your stockpile will only be good for a shorter time frame because they made the can hold 14% less food. Your cat may start having new health problems at this point. Mine became very itchy after the last reformulation. This last time, a company representative told me they "had to" reformulate so that they could decrease how often the food went out of stock. The food immediately went out of stock. Literally. The. Next. Day. 3. I guess all of the companies do this, but they keep making the cans smaller. When other companies do it, they generally leave the price alone (but you still pay more per unit weight, of course). Last time Royal Canin did it, they combined the change in can size with a major reformulation (to cheaper ingredients) AND raised the price. Customers now pay 25% more per ounce of food for a lower quality of food. They show a real lack of respect for the customers imagining they won't notice. 4. Savvy pet owners know to look at the first five ingredients listed (after water) to see where the nutrition is actually coming from. Since the reformulation, that fifth ingredient is now "natural flavors," following 1) Rabbit, 2) Rabbit Liver, 3) Pea Flour, and 4) Vegetable Oil. Just FYI, both rabbit and rabbit liver are themselves about 70% comprised of water, so with this combination of ingredients there is a significant likelihood that in eating this food your cat will get the majority of his calories and nutrition from pea flour, vegetable oil, and "natural flavors," with the majority of the protein from the "natural flavors" and pea flour. How about that?! To sum up, I recommend against this food. If you can afford it, and have the time, energy, and mental and physical capacity to do it, have a diet professionally formulated by a veterinary nutritionist and make your own food. You can use a food processor to get something like a pate, and it will have a much better texture and be much more appealing than this food and will NOT be made up of "natural flavors". You'll also be assured that your money isn't going to a company who really doesn't care about your pet (or your pet's owner).

No, I do not recommend this product.

Cat with allergies LOVES this food!

Our cat with terrible allergies completely loves this food! She barely eats kibble so we were concerned about her getting enough to eat when we had to change her to this food. Worries were put to rest when she gobbled up her first bowl and eagerly awaits her breakfast and supper meals each day.

What is the phosphorus content?

Why are these 5.1 oz cans the same price I paid a month ago (at my vet's office) for the 5.9 oz cans? Same pridce for less food.

    1. I asked Royal canin and they said it was a new “optimized” formula to help with not running out of product (which ironically is currently out of stock) and to make the cans nicer and more stackable. So they changed the food, gave less and passed the cost onto the customer. My kitty had finally acclimated to the food and now the last 3 days has vomited hairballs. Idk why they did this.
