I typically only write positive reviews for products I like and don’t write reviews for subpar products. Since it involves the wellbeing of my dog, I felt I needed to share so other owners can consider this feedback before starting their dog on this diet. I wish I’d reviewed this page before buying the food from my vet and feeding it to our dog. We started the hydrolyzed protein diet per our vet’s recommendation a couple months ago due to GI sensitivities. We started it mid-January to identify the type of protein that was giving our dog GI issues. 10 days after transitioning to this specific food, our golden’s skin started peeling off. She’d never had skin issues before. She was very uncomfortable and even started scooting due to her itchy skin. It was difficult to watch her shiny coat change so drastically and for her to be so uncomfortable. While the GI issues did diminish, the skin issues were almost as bad. Additionally, her ears started getting buildup and smelled. Nothing other than the food changed within her routine, so it was pretty easy to identify the issue. I started researching this specific food to see if any other pets had similar issues. Reading the reviews on this website reaffirmed my experience. Do not feed your dog this food, especially if you begin to see reactions like I did or similar to those of the other owners who gave low reviews on this page. There’s obviously something very wrong with the formula. There are other options out there that don’t have these negative health effects and that are more affordable too. I would not recommend the hydrolyzed protein line from Royal Canin to anyone. We’ve completely transitioned her off of it to a GI line from Science Diet, and her skin has improved substantially. The buildup in her ears has also decreased since switching, and she hasn’t had GI issues. This was a very disappointing experience, and I hope Royal Canin considers these reviews containing critical feedback for the betterment of our pets and their health. It was honestly scary to witness how quickly my dog had a strong adverse reaction to this food and to see other owners experienced similar issues. Do not buy.

Wow! At least this info helps in my decision making . My dog has been on Royal Canin HP food since Jan 2024. I recently (April 2025) started a novel protein for a couple of reasons. My dog stopped wanting to eat. His ears became irritated which is the biggest reason I agreed to try Royal Canin HP back in 2024. His skin looked like it did before I started the HP food. The last bag I bought at the end of March (2025) has been hard to get him to eat and still working on it. It is a 25.3 lb bag. My dog weighs 65 pds. He is 11 years old and figured he was just getting old and sick. I was getting low on HP food as I am still feeding him the dry HP kibble with the new novel protein. I purchased one 17lb bag of Royal Canin HP dry food and 24 cans of HP canned (May 2025) Thinking maybe he would eat the Royal Canin HP canned since his new protein was canned. Also having trouble getting the new novel canned protein I started. He won't eat the canned Royal Canin HP. (After this past week of Royal Canin HP dry, no novel protein for the last 7 days. His ears look awful and he has been laying around. He was looking better on the novel protein I had started(April 2025). I gave him a can of novel protein this morning and immediately he gobbled it down and went running around the back yard. I won't be giving him the Royal Canin HP again. His novel protein is lamb and no added vegetables, rice, etc.

Changes to Kibble are Terrible

Timm

We’ve been on this dog food for over a year and this last bag is making him sick. The kibble is a different color and texture than the previous food so they have changed something about the ingredients. Which is wild to do without notifying people since this is a dog food made for dogs with stomach issues. It’s very irresponsible and now my dog is paying for it.

We just started our cockapoo on this food about a month ago for allergies and digestive issues. He now has horrible hives all over his back, his hair is falling out, and his energy has been non existent- we thought it was allergies or something until I came across these reviews. He’s been off the food for 3 days now and his energy and personality have already bounced back significantly- hoping to see his skin recover over the coming weeks of getting off this terrible food.

Questions

1 - 5 of 5 Questions

For this product do we need a vet prescription to buy it or are you guys in charge of calling my dog's vet clinic for permission to this product Or do you prefer a prescription that my dog' doctor prescribe it?

  1. You have to have a prescription to purchase this item.  If you have a hard copy you can provide during purchase process.  Otherwise Petco can reach out to your vet to verify your pet has been prescribed this product.

My dogs are used to a dry food topped w/boiled chicken & carrots or sardines or eggs. Meds in peanut butter. What can I give them in addition to the hp dry food?  They’re confused by plain dry food.

  1. My shepherd has similar experience. Hard boiled eggs and cheese on kibble and meds with peanut butter. Now I use the canned Royal Canin HP to give my shepherd her meds. I mush the pill into a ball of the canned food. Plus I put some of the canned in with her kibble. She has adapted to the change and seems OK with the new diet.

Looking everywhere and can't find any store with this in stock. I'm running low. I was able to order a bag (small) however it is also a week out and will still take time to get to me. In the future, is there ANY alternative to this food? dry or wet? Thanx

  1. Unfortunately, I don’t know. My Labrador mixed German Shepherd was very itchy so my Vet recommended this formula and it did make a big positive difference! I think the best person to answer your question is your dog’s vet. Sorry, I couldn’t help you better

what is the main protein?

  1. Hydrolyzed soy and chicken

How many cups of food are in a 25 lb bag of HP dog food

  1. There are approximately 133 cups per bag
