Used to be great, Formula changed!

I fed my teacup poodle the puppy version for a while and then transitioned to the adult. Reasons for the low star rating are two things: 1) the kibble (like all the adult RC adult kibble vs puppy) is significantly larger for my doggie. It’s not giant by any means, it’s still small and same shape as puppy but I found her having trouble chewing it and digesting it as well. I then switched back to the puppy version as even though she is now almost 4 years old, she’s 3.5 pounds and I also noticed calorie wise this has about 20+ more calories than the puppy version, which is typically opposite. 2) is because the ingredients or recipe etc have changed within the last 12-16 months, give or take on this particular dog food. I have seen the calories changed on other forumulas as well, though minor, but that isn’t what turns me off. The point of this particular food is so the stools don’t smell as pungent vs if you bought the xs reg adult food. It is intended for those who have doggies that are more indoor pets and had in the past, with both the puppy and adult version, made the stools less pungent. Since she’s so tiny her poops aren’t huge to begin with and I’m around her 65% or more of the time, so when she does go, of course it doesn’t smell like roses and I flush it down the toilet, but in past there would be times I wouldn’t know she had gone until next day as she has a few designated spots. The newer formula changed somehow and it just made the stools smell so stinky, worse than other foods she tried, and pure poodle or other ones I’ve also used. I discontinued using this because having an indoor dog food where the stools would be less stinky was a great idea and worked for the first two years or so. But this and the puppy version have both changed so the indoor factor where stools would be less stinky is no longer the case. It was good (particularly puppy over adult just cause of size) initially but RC seems to keep switching things up, and not in a good way. Had better luck with a diff one from RC that’s intended for a diff teacup breed which she is able to digest better and stools are less stinky than the indoor version. (I never tried the adult poodle as she was never a fan of the puppy version, and read the poodle version is for larger poodles). Hopefully RC doesn’t switch up her current one, I didn’t give it one star because RC in general has had high praises from my main vet and other vets I’ve seen. I do want to try a healthier alternative in the future as I don’t like how much filler is in the ingredients of RC in general.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Great food but why doesn’t Royal Canin offer this in a larger size bag? They literally offer all other foods in a large bag but why not this one?? Very frustrating and not cost effective

I changed from Blue Buffalo with no regrets. Add a tad of water to make gravy and my babay Beau enjoys it. Think I have to get him a sloew feeder. It smells rich and not as hard as blue buffalo. im weaning him off blue so im still mixing but once the blue is gone its Royal for my bsby for sure!

Yes, I recommend this product.

Questions

1 - 4 of 4 Questions

Small indoor adult is in only 1 size? I won't buy a bag under 10lbs, 2.5lbs is pointless.

  1. Yes, it’s only one size 2.5 pounds. You won’t be purchasing this product then.

Is this type of dog food good for a indoor 3yr old miniature schnauzer? Or do you have another recommendation?

  1. Hi Zoë 8, This will be good but we suggest that you ask for your vet's suggestion. Thanks,

Is this ideal for a four pound dog?

  1. We would recommend the X-Small Adult

Does the indoor life adult dog food come in a larger bag other than the 2.5 lb bag? It is he pink bag. It's for my Pomeranian. thank you.  Ryder has been eating this for years and has no tummy problems like he had with some other brands.

  1. That product does not come in a larger bag.
