I don't know the thickness in inches but I'd compare it to a cushioned floor mat that you use to stand on while doing dishes. It is water resistant but it has a slight texture that makes cleaning up vomit a bit of a chore, no biggie you just need some elbow grease and it's all good. I have rinsed this mat off in the tub and also outside with a hose. My only gripe is my dog has put some holes (into but not through it) with her nails. She does this weird nesting/scratching thing to settle herself in her crate with her blankets. If you're dog is a chewer then beware. So far, this mat has held up well and really works to quiet the sound of pitter pattering nails on the crate's floor. 4 out of 5 stars and I'd recommend this to other dog owners. Hope this helps! Also, my senior dog is around 80lbs and I think this mat gives her some support when she chills in her crate. If it wasn't for the slight texture of the mat, it would be perfect. Good luck.

I recommend using it with the tray. Your dog may pull up the mat and expose the wires underneath if you end up removing the tray. The tray also provides stability.

Hi san diego gal The Vari Kennel has dimensions of 40x27x30. Our 42"Length SKU 2694384 is the closest in dimension at 41.13" x27 x 38". Since the dimensions are a little larger and the mat is square vs. the irregular shape of the kennel, it would need to be trimmed to fit. The 36"Length SKU 2694350 is 35.75" x 21.75" and would likely be smaller. Thanks,
