Very small kibble size

DebK

Kibble size seems too small for this big (14-16#) tomcat (now neutered.) It's too small for him to "crunch" on it as he likes to do. Given a choice he will choose a larger kibble to eat, but without any choice he will eat this smaller kibble without any problems.

Great Food for diabetes and urinary health

I recently had a second cat, Oliver, diagnosed with diabetes. It's bothered me since my first cat, Vinnie, was diagnosed over 3 years ago that the dry food I was using wasn't diabetic food. Neither cats' diabetes was very well controlled, with their readings still being between 300 and 400. I co-run a rescue and am the only one in the rescue that will foster cats, so I have between 30 and 40 cats loose in my home at one time. Some of those cats have had urinary crystals and have been on a prescription urinary food for years now. To switch to a diabetic food, all the cats would have to be switched. And my vet said the price was not affordable when having to buy for the number of cats I have, and she felt it best to continue the urinary food, and just advised giving Vinnie more canned food to keep him full so he wouldn't eat much dry. And she advised the same thing when Oliver was diagnosed. Vinnie actually passed away 6 days before Oliver was diagnosed. It wasn't from his diabetes, not directly anyway. It was from FIP, that we thought he was cured of. When he relapsed, the disease was too far advanced and ruined his kidneys, and the FIP meds did not work this time. His diabetes more than likely played a role in his death. His high glucose readings didn't help his kidneys, his diabetes lowered his immune system, and the fact that he was a diabetic led us to believe some odd and subtle symptoms he was having was from his diabetes, when it was actually from an FIP relapse. Vinnie never should have died. I should have known it was FIP and not diabetes. And maybe if his sugar was controlled better, he would have never gotten FIP to begin with. And then Oliver was diagnosed. And his glucose wasn't being well controlled either. I really wanted to look into an affordable diabetic dry cat food, and began researching different brands. I found the Purina Pro Plan prescription DM food, and upon reading the discription, I learned that it's a urinary food as well! It was a win win, except for the price. I could never afford the cost to feed to 30+ cats. Then I learned that as a shelter employee, I was eligible to purchase the Pro Plan foods, including the Veterinary Foods, at half price through the purina for professionals program, if the rescue partnered with program through petfinder. I signed up, my vet approved the prescription, I was able to stop buying the prescription urinary food so it is not costing me any more money. I actually get three more pounds of the diabetic food in the same price as I was paying for the urinary food. The cats love food and it is made a decent difference already in Oliver's glucose readings. Best move I ever made!

Not for diabetic cats!

This food is DIETETIC, not diabetic. The carb content his higher than what a diabetic cat should have, which is insane considering the price.
