My cat loves this diet

Sydney Acres

This is a wonderful, nearly carb-free, well-balanced diet that my cat absolutely loves. I'm taking off one star not because of the food but because of the label. I love that the ingredient list is divided into "ingredients," "minerals," and "vitamins." However, what concerns me is the animal source of the "meat byproducts" is not listed. I don't have a problem with meat byproducts in general -- it's just the non-muscle parts of the animal that is not commonly used for human consumption -- internal organs, etc. Nothing wrong with that in pet food. However, in a pet food that is labeled as "sensitive skin & stomach" and "specialized," it is important for a consumer to know if there is any ingredient in the diet that could trigger a food allergy, as the implication from the labeling is that this is a limited-ingredient diet. If the listed meat byproducts come from chicken and a cat is allergic to chicken, this isn't an appropriate choice for that food-allergic cat. If the source of the meat byproducts is not consistent, maybe from chicken in one batch and beef in another batch, then this isn't an appropriate choice for pet owners trying to manager their food-allergic cat. The problem here is that we aren't given the necessary information to make an informed choice. I recognize that nowhere on the label is it stated that this is a limited ingredient diet, but by using terms like "specialized" and "sensitive skin and stomach," there is an impression of something more than just the main ingredient being duck, and this labeling could mislead consumers into buying a diet that is not appropriate for their food-allergic pet. (I recognize that there are significant space limitations on the label of a small can, so decisions have to be made as to what to include vs what to exclude, but no such limitations exist on your website, which also does not contain this important information.)

I like this food for my kids (kits) but it is a little thicker than most pates. You might need to add a little water to make is smooth and appealing.

Questions

1 - 7 of 7 Questions

“Meat by-products”—is there chicken in this? My 14 yr old male is allergic to chicken.

  1. My best advice to you is to call Purina direct. They would be the only ones that can tell you if the duck contains any chicken( Meat-by-Product). You need to ask them exactly what meat is in the meat-by-product.

Hi, What kind of liver is in ProPlan Duck?

  1. Thanks for asking! Because our Pro Plan pet foods are formulated to meet the nutritional requirements of the given pet, the liver can be from either pork or poultry in this formula. - The Pro Plan Team
