Great to keep my 9 month old kitten sort of at bay

Joe Schmuckatelli

I purchased this device a little over a month ago and I was sceptical. I needed a way to keep the kitten off the dogs and away from the doggy door. Pro's: Small transmitter (smaller than a smoke detector) and receiver collar. Not too strong of a shock. Seems to work for a long time on one set of batteries (over 1 month now). Cons: The receiver is a bit larger than I expected being a Cat was part of the marketing. The CR2032 batteries were very weak when received. Now for my experience. First of all the collar strap is wide for a cat, it looks normal for a medium sized dog. The receiver is not heavy. I was able to fit this device to my roton dog attacking kitten and he didn't mind it. A little scratching but that stopped in a few days. He wore the collar all day with no complaints. I take the collar off at night or I loosen it up if I let him sleep with it. The next day I powered the electronics up and placed the transmitter on it's highest setting and put it under the dogs bed. Well he attacked the dogs yet again. The problem was the probes were not touching the kittens skin (lots of fur), so I tightened the collar about 1/8" and tried again, try number three works great. The kitted was hunting the dogs and he was creeping up under the bed when "WHAM!" and he shot out of the room like he was shot in the rear. Now folks, there is no need to shave the kittens neck so the probes touch skin. Over a few minutes or more of activity, they will find a way through the fur and eventually touch some skin. Let me state that I first tried the device on my arm. It was a very mild shock. I have a bark collar that is much more devastating. It took a few attack attempts before the kitten gave up, but he was trying. I placed the transmitter to the side of the doggy door on a medium power setting so he would not get too close. He has not dared to get that close. The sound the collar emits (beep beep) does deter him and I am training him to react to the beep before a shock occurs, and eventually to learn to leave the dogs alone and don't go through the doggy door without the collar on. Yes, he can run right through the warning sound and escape being shocked so you need to be smart how you place the transmitter. When he sees the transmitter, he knows to be careful. I will remove the collar for a day or two to see what he's learned. He's learning but he gets some of the kitten energy going and he's almost unstoppable. Is it perfect? Eh, not really but this has solved one major problem, he will not go near the doggy door. The other problem I have is protecting two older dogs who do not like those kitten claws. The dogs like cats, but they are not use to being attacked. If I purchased a transmitter for every location the dogs would lay down, the kitten would have no place to be. With that said, it would be fantastic if there was a small collar mounted transmitter that I could attach to the dogs. So, if the Petsafe folks are reading this, Do you have a collar mounted transmitter to protect the other pets in the house from the holy terror on four legs? As for the ratings on this product... I can't really deduct any stars, it does work as advertised and the price was fair for a little peace in the house. Now if I could just locate a collar transmitter.

I loved this for our kitchen because the dog would try to steal things when we are not at home. It worked great for a short time and then wouldn’t work anymore. I switched out the batteries but it’s still dead :( the responder - the collar still works after having replaced the battery as well. Disappointed it broke it wasn’t cheap

Great until it stopped working

I bought this product in October to keep my cat off the counter. Recently it just stopped working. I replaced all the batteries and tried all the troubleshooting. The collar isn’t reacting at all. It’s a shame spending a lot of money on something that will fail a few months later

Battery system too fragile

Griff3

We have the system to keep the cat from going out the dog door. Worked well until batteries died in the collar. The small tabs to hold the batteries broke off removing the batteries. They are too small and weak to stand the removal of the batteries. Some modification must be done to strenghten the system, I have had to order another collar.

Terrible rip off

Definitely not a 12 foot diameter. Literally had to put the collar to the barrier for it to even shock. Terrible

Good system needs a mini size collar.

Meh meh

I got the mini system thinking it would be good for our small dog. Unfortunately, the Collar is way to big for Chihuahua. Specifically, the box part, it is way to big for a Chihuahua's neck and the metal contact points are way to long. There are no shorter prongs to switch out to. Our Chihuahua has an extremely short to nonexistent fur coat. We have tried several ways to get it to fit, but the box part hangs awkwardly and rubs her skin raw very quickly. I would love a smaller box with significantly shorter prongs. The strap parts were easy to cut to correct length.

Great for training my little dogs

Works well enough for our little dogs. Test light is a nice feature (the little black plastic thing) - you touch the 2 pads on the light to the back of the collar and the light turns on when in range of the sensor. Sensor range is limited.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Questions

I HAVE A 6 POUN D TOY POODLE. IS THIS SMALL ENOUGH COLLAR FOR HER?

  1. Great question! These collars are designed for pets 5lbs and up.

Are the collars for the PetSafe outdoor mini barrier and PetSafe wireless fence compatible?  Or are multiple collars required?

  1. Thank you for your great question. The Pawz Away Barriers are not compatible with Wireless Fences. They are, however, compatible with the YardMax In-Ground Fence systems.

Is it easy to turn on and off. For example If I want a cat to be outside the dog door when I am away, but allowed to come in through the dog door when I am home?

  1. Great question! Yes, you would just need to press the minus button a few times to power it off. The amount of presses needed will vary depending on what level you have the barrier set to.

Can I place this next to the dog door entrance to keep a medium hair cat confined to inside (or outside) while giving my old dog free access to the dog door?

  1. Thank you for this question. Yes, you can absolutely use this Pawz Away Mini Pet Barrier to help train your kitty to not use the dog door.

How do I get extra barrier transmitters for multiple areas around the house? And will they all work for one collar?

  1. Thank you for your question, Emelia. Additional Mini Add-A-Barrier devices can be purchased under model number PWF00-14040. It is absolutely possible to use multiple barriers with a single receiver collar.

Will it keep a cat from road we live right on road

  1. Thank you for this question. Our Pawz Away Mini Pet Barrier is best used for smaller areas you wish to deter your pet from within the home. At the largest setting, it can cover up to a 5ft diameter. We would like to learn more about how large the area is you need to keep your cat away from to recommend the appropriate product for you. Please give our product experts a call at 1-800-732-2677 for further assistance when you can.

Is this okay for a rug space only? I just don’t want my dog on our rug because she pees on it but she is okay on the couch. Will this prevent her to be on the rug only or also the couch for being too close?  Thanks

  1. Thank you for your great question. The Pawz Away Mini Barrier has a maximum range diameter of 5 feet. Due to this, it will all depend on placement to determine if your dog can access the couch or not.

Can you adjust the sensitivity?

  1. Thank you for your question! You can adjust the range of the device to determine exactly when the collar will begin activating. The correction level itself cannot be adjusted since it automatically increases on its own depending how far your pet moves into the boundary field.

Is this safe for cats?

  1. Thank you for this question, Mandi! These units are perfectly safe for cats of all sizes. The weight recommendation of 5 lbs. and up is due solely to the weight of the box on their neck; the static correction is completely safe.

My dog is pretty strong and stubborn for a small Pomeranian mixed with Chihuahua. She's 13 to 15 lbs will this keep her from running out the front door and how can I use them outside?

  1. Thank you for your great question. This collar is suitable for dogs 5 pounds and up with neck sizes at least six inches around. The Mini Barrier is waterproof, so you can place them outside to keep your pets out of specific areas in the yard.
