Extreme weather dog door

Chrisocupertino

I originally stalled this dog door in 2016. We have three large dogs that fly through this thing all day long. I have replaced the flaps once, but finally after nine years, the plastic cracked and broke, and I needed to replace the whole door. Although the new door fits directly into the old door location, a design change in the new door has made it not quite as weatherproof as the original one. They have removed the additional weatherstripping that was on the sides of the flap and there was a little threshold between the two flaps that is now missing. My youngest dog had trouble navigating the new door and even getting her foot stuck because the lack of the threshold. She has since learned a different way to enter the door and everything is working good at this time. Just slightly disappointed that they redesigned it in a cost cut measure

Unsure of the new design

Do I have a 'public name'

This is our second purchase of this pet door. Within a few months, PetSafe changed the way they make it and now the back part (the cover on the inside of the door) is no longer secure. Instead of sliding into block the dog door, the cover 'snaps' over the back and you can push it off from the outside. Not secure at all. And I'm not sure it will be that good at blocking the elements out, either.

I'm satisfied and my dog loves it

I bought this today on sale for 119.00 from local petco. so far the install was simple enough if you are comfortable cutting into a door im in all aspects of construction so nothing out of the normal and it was just being upsized from a small dog door to a large for my pup. over all it seems very cheap at first with it being all plastic and including plastic screws was not impressed. But after it was done all the things I was whinning about don't seem to be a big deal the door definitely holds out the weather only place I can feel excessive cold air is from the outer areas where i havent caulked yet on the main doors design. This door is pretty solid over all I would like to see metal bolts but I'm sure there is a reason everything else was great and my only complaint is without reason on this product I don't like the plastic bolts.

Yes, I recommend this product.

We appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback with us! We can absolutely explain why the nylon bolts are important. Nylon bolts can shift with the door over time with changes in weather in ways that metal bolts cannot. This prevents strain on the frame that would cause damage over time, and also creates a better installation experience for our customers as these bolts are easier to cut to the needed size without specialized tools. We're so sorry for any confusion.

Interior door pain

Bridge

Have had this door in for over a year. I like the three layer baffle but the plastic snap on door is painful to apply and remove. Bent Uber fingers trying to get purchase on the thin tabs makes it awkward in not a falling hazard.

Bought this pet door about three years ago for our lake house. We love it. When we had the porch screened in we needed a way for our rescue pups to go in and out but also needed a way to block the entrance when we were not there. We think our son's pittbull tried to use the door. We're missing the screws on one side. On this site now to look for more screws and a new, clean looking, flap.

Bad design and a pain to install

Ajadams2

I bought this because of the good reviews, but this door has major design issues. I would not buy it again. 1. Nylon screws helps if you don't drill a straight line through the door but it's easy to round out the Phillips head. 2. The screw locations on the frame are too close to the edge. There is no room for error. If your door cut out is 1/8 " off, you will be drilling right on the edge of your hole opening. 3. Gap between the flap and door edge allows for cold or hot air to flow through. I used 1/4" self adhesive door and window weather stripping but it affected the way the flaps so I may try 1/8" when I can go buy some. The Petsafe aluminum pet door has a groove for the weather stripping. 4. You have to cut the interior plastic pieces and use it to form a rectangle that will be used for the interior frame. Instructions said to use duct tape on the corners. 5. I'm a handy person and this door was a pain to install. My hole in the door is now longer and I am unable to reinstall my Petsafe aluminum single flap petdoor. I really wanted to use this pet door but it has too many issues.

No, I do not recommend this product.

We're so sorry to hear you had difficulty installing your door!

It is crucial to mention that cutouts should never be made using measurements, but always only the template that came with the door. This eliminates the risk of screws not being placed correctly, etc. We're so sorry for any misunderstanding.

In case this information is helpful, too, nylon screws also help with the longevity of your door, as they are able to shift over time with changes in temperature in ways that metal screws cannot. This reduces strain on the frame, and increases the life of the door overall. These screws are used with most of our pet doors, including the original single flap door you would have had.

We would not recommend attempting to alter the sides of the door with weatherstripping, as this will change how the flaps move and sit, and typically will increase cold and heat transfer rather than decreasing it. Though a very slight amount of air transfer will always be possible around the edges of pet door flaps, this will be minimized by the three flap system on this door. If you are unsure if your flaps are adjusted to best cover the opening, we would recommend contact our Customer Care team; we'll be happy to troubleshoot with you! Our number is 1-800-732-2677, and our hours are Monday through Friday 8 A.M.- 7 P.M. Cat does not come in

Barce

We installed the flap 2 weeks ago and my car is still not comfortable with that. Unfortunately temperatures are already sounds 5 Celsius or below and we can't let the flap open to her. She sniffs it and backs up without even trying to come in. I'm afraid she will freeze outside and always end up helping her through the flap. Temperatures here can go down to -30C and I'm afraid for her. I think she is afraid of using it, either because of weight, or the noise or because she can't see through. Any tips?

Questions

1 - 10 of 38 Questions

do you have a pet door with an opening of 10" by 18"?

 1. Thank you for this question! The flap opening of the large PetSafe Extreme Weather Door is 10 1/8” x 16 1/4”. Regrettably we do not offer a size with a 10" by 18"opening specifically.

What are the inside dimensions of medium and large pet door?

 1. Thank you for this question! The flap opening of the medium PetSafe Extreme Weather Door measures 5 1/8” x 8 ¼”, and the flap opening of the large size measures 8 1/8” x 12 ¼”.

I have installed a PetSafe patio panel door. Will the extreme weather flaps fit this door?

 1. Thank you for your question, Glenn! The Extreme Weather flaps will not work in any of our doors that use our standard vinyl flaps. You would specifically need one of our Extreme Weather Pet Doors in order to use the Extreme Weather flap.

Can this door be installed on the kick panel of a sunroom or is on a door the only option?

 1. The door comes with options to put it in a wall or a door

Would it be easy for an 8 lb. Chihuahua to push through both ways?

 1. Well the panels are very secure it doesn’t take much effort to open them and they closeEasily. You probably would have to put it lower in the door or wall for your puppies height. I have four dogs and they go through it like it’s not even there and love it to get outside. Would definitely recommend this. I live in Alaska and the room does not get cold from it.

One review stated that it needed a “lock” but other reviews stated it could be locked. I want to be sure this can be locked/blocked. Thank you!

 1. It comes with a panel that locks it or blocks it

Can it be installed in a steel raised panel door ?

 1. Thank you for your great question. This pet door can be installed in standard doors that are 1⅝" to 2¼" thick.

I already have a petsafe single-flap door (medium) in my door- does this door match the same dimensions? It can be very windy where I live and during the summer the single flap door just flaps in the wind. I want to replace it with this one.

 1. hard to say; you'd have to measure. The dimensions are here: https://store.petsafe.net/extreme-weather-aluminum-pet-door I bought mine several years ago; it came with completely useless flimsy plastic screws and nuts. Replaced them with metal.

what size hole would I need for the large dog door?

 1. Thank you for your great question. In the large size, the cutout is approximately 11¼" x 19". Please note that we advise not making any cuts until you have the cutting template in hand so you can make the most accurate cuts possible.

can it be installed in a wall?

 1. Yes, I put mine in the door, however there are directions to put it between two studs in the wall.
