Mine rusted out and broke within a few months.

We had trouble with the battery key and got new ones, but it never seemed to work as easily as it should have. When we went to replace the batteries in the door, they had seeped come take your meds and rusted out the springs.

Plastic hinges suck

Nice door except for the cheap hinge. They break way too easy and then the door flap starts smacking the frame.

Not that great

This is great if you either want to permanently lock it or use the pet keys. Trying to unlock it after you lock it is almost impossible, as soon as I can afford a new one it will happen.

I've had two of these doors. Both large. The door broke off the first one and the motor went bad on the second FOUR DAYS after install. Complete garbage.

Was gifted this door small size for my cat about 3 months ago. Worked fine when I tested it before installing. After installing doesn't work at all. Have had to manually rotate hinge into unlocked position. If I wanted just a flap without the ability to lock it that is what I would have asked for. As far as I'm concerned it is a waste of money and time.

Timing with the fob is too short with too dogs

The plastic hinges are not going to last long I’m afraid. The problem I am experiencing is the use of the fobs. The door operates with the fobs fine but with two dogs it’s only a matter of time before there will be a problem. One dog activates it and it opens. They both go out. It starts to close while the second dog goes out at the same time. The time it starts to shut is too soon after it opens. Door still swinging and it shuts. I’m afraid it’s going to bend the metal piece that holds the plastic hinges or break the plastic hinges. I can’t stand by that door all the time. Two dogs. It’s an issue.

Bought this for my pup. It’s been in use for 6 months and already broken. My dog walked in and the flap broke. I’m seeing a lot of complaints about that now. You cannot order a new flap so if it breaks then you’re out about 200 bucks. The batteries die so fast on this as well so if you do buy then your going to need back up batteries on hand.

Unsafe

I've had this for a year in hopes of using it occassionally, and keeping it locked most of the time to keep raccoons out of the garage. That part worked but changing between modes was frustrating and sometimes didn't work. Worst part: One of my dogs was going through the door and had a moments hesitation and backed his nose and head back but left a paw in the door. The hard plastic door slammed back trapping his foot, leaving him screaming and me panicking. Not safe in my opinion, removing it today.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Questions

Can you put this on a sliding door, I have a soggy door insert for a sliding door, can it be put over/in place of the existing doggy door in the sliding door?

  1. Thank you so much for asking. This door was designed to be installed in a standard door or wall with the optional wall extension kit. Regrettably, we would not have any suggestions or recommendations for a dyi situation such as this.

Can you buy replacement parts vs an entire door? Like many people on here, the bar with the plastic tabs has broken off after about 6 months. The door itself is fine. Is there a way to just buy those parts or is buying a new door the only option?

  1. To help determine the replacement parts available for your pet's door, please reach out to our Customer Care team directly at 1-866-738-4379.

what is measurements of the entire door

  1. Thank you for asking about this! So that we can best provide information for you, please reach out to our Customer Care team and let us know which size you are interested in.

I purchased the large electronic pet door. The maximum wall thickness for the door is 2", however I have to install it in a 3" thick wall. Do you have an extension to make up the 1" difference between the interior and exterior sections of the door?

  1. Thank you for this question! The Electronic SmartDoor™ Wall Conversion Kit allows for the installation of the Large SmartDoor into walls up to 7 1/4 inches thick. It is important to mention with a wall 3" thick, the pet door may not be flush with the wall.

How do I measure my dog to decide whether I need a large or small door?

  1. Thank you for your question! We recommend measuring your dog's body width and height, then comparing these measurements to the flap openings of each door. When measuring height, you would want to start from the deepest part of your dog's chest and measure to the top of your dog's back. The flap openings for the doors are as follows: Small: 5 ½” x 7 7/8”, Large: 11” x 16”

Can I replace a sliding glass door installation (11x18) with this door?

  1. No it goes into a regular wood door

What are the dimensions of the large and small smart doors

  1. Thank you for your great question. The flap opening of the small SmartDoor is 5½" x 7⅞". The flap opening of the large door is 11" x 16". The small door's frame measures 9" x 15⅝" while the large frame is 16⅛" x 23⅝"

will this door work in a storm door?

  1. Great question! This Electronic SmartDoor can be installed in most standard doors measuring 1½" to 2" thick. We do recommend to avoid installing this product in a metal door as the metal can interfere with the radio signal from door and SmartKey. For further product information, feel free to contact our experts at 1-800-732-2677.

I am interested in this for my two Boxers; but want to keep the cats in. How long does the dog stay open when the dogs use it? The cats are very fast and will learn to sneak out if given the chance.

  1. Thank you for your great question. This door will remain unlocked so long as the SmartKey is within range of the door. For example, if your dog takes a nap right next to the door, the door will remain unlocked the whole time they are napping within range of the door.

What size is the small door

  1. Thank you for your question, Bob! The frame of the small Electronic SmartDoor is 9” x 15 5/8”.
