Top door annoying, but great crate overall

I have 2 Petmate kennels (19" and 24") and they're your basic hard-sided carrier. All's well & good, though the top-load door is more obnoxious than it's worth - it will NOT stay open on its own, so if you're going to load your pet in from the top, know you'll need one hand available to hold the top door open. If you're loading into the front, you'll have no problem.

The best carrier I found in all my shopping

Very well-made and sturdy carrier which allows you to put your pet in either through the front or through the top which is very handy. This is my second purchase of this particular carrier as I previously owned a 19 inch version for my kittens and this is the 24 inch version. The best carrier I have come across and I’ve shopped around quite a lot

It’s great!

Sturdy, lightweight. Love having two door options. I gave mine to my daughter when she got her cat (and bought a crummy carrier!) so this is my 2nd purchase of the same exact one. It’s that good.

Good kennel carrier, with a few limitations

I’ve had two of this exact model before (but blue) and enjoyed it, but I passed them to a rescue adoption family. (The kittens were trained with them so it seemed fitting). I automatically repurchased the same because they lasted 8 years already and still looked great. They’re well built but the handle is on the top door, press fit onto the wire. Therefore it flexes with heavier pets. You can’t move the handle elsewhere because then it wouldn’t be central for carrying and then it doesn’t lay flat so they can’t be stacked well for storage & transit. Lastly, the measurements are of the outer dimension. So if you look at the bubble-shape design in the photo, you can see the pet’s floor space is a little less than the overall outer dimension. That’s cozy for smaller pets and really helps it stay centered in a forward faced position (buckled-in) on car seat cushions. Unfortunately, my 12 year old fat cat is too big to lay out and turn around in the size I got. I returned it with no problems and will switch to a carrier with more cubical or straight upright wall design so my pet can make use of more of the whole dimension it takes up. These also have no quick releases, so when you put it together (top bolts onto bottom), it isn’t meant to be taken apart between trips. That’s okay for ready stored carriers, but I’d like to use one that makes an open bed when not on the move, and stacks tiny for storage otherwise. This carrier is also not rated for air travel, if that’s what you need. However if none of these little issues apply to you, I can definitely recommend this as I had two for over 8 years and they still look pretty new. They fit the cheap standard washable fuzzy beds from Menards and are very easy to clean & disinfect as well. (Don’t use bleach or alcohol on plastics. Use quaternary ammonium compounds for viruses and bacteria, or peroxide for pet parasites with cysts, like CDC says. Bleach and alcohol can etch plastics, making them fragile or brittle, and making surfaces more receptive to harboring various pathogens over time).

No, I do not recommend this product.

Sturdy and secure!

After much researching, I decided to go with Petmate to transport my 8.5 lb cat on car rides and was very happy with this decision! I love that I can put her in the top and close it quickly as she is an expert escape artist. Have tried the zippered models but she busts out while I’m still fiddling with the zippers with both hands. Highly recommend this model!

Too Small

We have Maine Coons and although I was told this was good for large cats there is no way we could get them into this carrier from the top which is why we were interested. We returned it today.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Thank you for your feedback. As Maine Coons are larger then the typical cat, we always suggest to use the 28" or 32" plastic kennels. All of the items we manufacture are available directly on our website at www.petmate.com. Thank you again - we appreciate your time. Questions

Sort by: Newest Answers

What is the size of the top opening?

 1. Thank you for your product inquiry. Please reach out to the manufacturer for assistance.

Is this a good size for a Pug? Might also like a second one for a Boston Terrier

 1. Thank you for your inquiry. Our two door top loading kennels only come in a size 19" which is up to 10lbs, and the 24" is up to 15lbs. These kennels would not be tall enough for those size breeds. You would need a larger size kennel to make sure when they stand, your dog is not bending at the elbows, can stand tall and turn around comfortably. Sincerely, Petmate Consumer Services

Is the carrier suitable for airplane cargo hold travel

 1. Thank you for your inquiry. Petmate always recommends calling the airline and visiting the airline’s website to get the Airliner’s requirements on traveling as each airline has different criteria and specifications. Sincerely, Petmate Consumer Services

what size needed for a mini dauschund?

 1. Thank you for your inquiry. This 24" size would be work. We always recommend to make sure you dog can stand nice and tall in their kennel without slouching, and can turn around comfortably. Sincerely, Petmate Consumer Services
