Cuttlebones Are Good for Birds

Cuttlebones are good to have in the cage. Some of my birds, in particular, go at the cuttlebone as still as it's available. It provides a good source of calcium.

Yes, I recommend this product.

My birds adore these cuttlebones

I am unsure what makes these different from the smaller cuttlebones you can buy, but whenever I put these in for my Parakeets and conure, they are encouraged to chew. The only issue is that they grind through them so fast! Must be an indicator that it's a good quality product.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Be aware: As is made clear in the ingredient list on the back of the package, this product is NOT a solid bone from the inside of a cuttlefish. Real cuttlebone has one ingredient: cuttlebone. This ingredient list includes: “Calcium Carbonate, Cuttlefish bone Powder, Flaxseed oil, Thiamine Hydrochloride, and Natural Flavor.” It’s powder compressed into a mold with little waves to simulate real cuttlebone. But it crumbles, leaves a copious chalky residue, and breaks ridiculously easily. If you just want a calcium block for your bird and don’t mind your hands looking like you just used a chalkboard, then this product would be fine. But if you want an actual cuttlebone on which your bird can scrape its beak to keep it short, look elsewhere.

No, I do not recommend this product.

I have two zebra finches who love the regular old cuttle bone. I got this kind this time since It's so much bigger and i thought would last longer. They hated it, didn't even bother with it. It does seem to be a different type of material and density than the normal kind.

No, I do not recommend this product.

can i grind this up into powder and use it for a land snail or uther pets that use cuttlebone as a calcium source?

  1. I have never used it this way but since it is natural I see no reason why not. I would think you want to make sure that that the powder is the right consistency for the pet you are giving it to so they can utilize it properly.

Can I use this for my red eared slider?

how do i use the hangiing device

    1. I don't use the little metal hanger because it never holds it securely. I have a "zip tie" that fits around the cage bars and the widest part of cuddle one. It holds it in place without it falling off it's little medal clip. When it's time to put a new cuddlebone in the cage, I just slip the old one off and slide the new one in. This works much better then the flimsy one that came with it. Much sturderier this way.
