Avoid if your dog has sensitive digestion

rachelms

We have been feeding our Belgian Malinois this food for four or five months. He's a pure bred dog from a championship line and so has always been a bit fussy. So when he started refusing his food, we just thought it was him being finicky. Then he started producing the most awful slimy stools, had audible tummy noises and was frequently sick. He was lethargic and bad tempered. We took him to the vet and they analysed his stool - found nothing abnormal. We have since realised that there are a lot of lentils, beans and other legumes in this food and reckoned its caused him gas and pain. I've since read up on a dog's inability to digest lectins which are found in legumes and the associated symptoms are exactly what our dog has been suffering from. He got medicine for the nausea and diarrhea from the vet and is now on Virbac dog food for sensitive dogs. He happily eats it and has had no problems with his digestion since. It's shameful that a large company like Mars despite its gargantuan size still pursues profit over quality. We are so glad we found out it was the food and not our dog just being fussy or we could have caused him further harm.

Great ingredient, dog loved!

Our dog loves this food along with our two cats' more than the Orijen cat food. Tried the Farmers dog for a while but this is much more liked by our 1.5-year-old Woodle. I would highly suggest giving this a try! Its nice to know that none of the first five ingredient aren't fillers.

My 3 small dogs have been on this food now for about a month and a half after suddenly being picky with their previous food after years of eating it. All 3 of them absolutely devour this food. The best part is that it has made my 9 year old pug feel so good on a daily basis. She has so much energy now. I wasn’t expecting this result and I’m extremely happy with orijen dog food.

Good food. Wish Origen would consider changing the shape of the kibble to one with round edges. Four sharp corners causes my littles to choke sometimes.

I'm a breeder from Malta. I find this product very good and excellent for my frenchies because they suffer from many allergies.

I was informed about Orijen as i worked in a pet store. I've had my girl on Orijen since I first got her and she has moved on from puppy to regular and she is thriving. She is happy and healthy and lover her Orijen bag.

Used to be Five Star - Something changed

This review is for Senior and the Original dry. Would be five star except something has changed in recipe that’s resulting in very large stools, the kibble no longer has a fresh mildly fishy smell and looks drier. I’ve been using Orijen since 2012 with tremendous success - as evidenced by healthy, strong dogs with great hair. I waited a year before posting this review to see if my experience was an anomaly, but the kibble hasn’t returned to what I used to purchase. It’s not working for us but hopefully works for others and is worth trying. One of the features of Orijen is dogs eat it right away - no gravy or “sweeteners” needed. With regret, I’m trying other brands.

Something has changed

Our dogs have been fed this kibble with the same version of FD from Orijen and they have loved it and thrived on it. This most recent bag that was delivered on July 18th, instantly made our dogs sick with vomitting and bloody diarrhea. Which they never get. I don't know if sourcing has changed or formula but it did smell 'off' I cannot find a lot number on the bag.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Questions

1 - 10 of 12 Questions

Have there been any changes to the ingredients/formulation and or the source of the ingredient since the Mars acquisition of Champion Petfoods?

  1. This announcement in no way changes our commitment to providing the highest quality ACANA & ORIJEN food possible for dogs and cats to help them thrive and be their best. Champion Petfoods has a history of innovation when it comes to our ingredients and our foods, and changes are made with the intention of improving them. As part of this work, we will from time to time make minor changes to our foods. this has nothing to do with who owns us. Champion Petfoods will operate as an independent business unit, so it will continue to be business as usual for us. You can continue to expect incredible food from us.

Did Orijen change how the make their kibble? It used to say slow baked under low temperatures and now it doesn’t. My dog is prone to forming lipomas and I try to choose non-extruded kibble.

  1. We have not changed our processing! If you would like additional information about our products, our Customer Care Team would be happy to help. Feel free to reach out by emailing: customercare@championpetfoods.com

Are the fish in Orijen dog food farm raised or wild caught?

  1. The majority of the fish we use in our diets are wild-caught, with a few exceptions. For specific inquiries, feel free to contact our Customer Care team via email at customercare@championpetfoods.com.

I bought this because of the quality, but I'm having second thoughts about the really high protein and the grain-free formula (the best foods all seemed to be grain-free). Would it be a problem to mix in a little well-cooked brown rice and oatmeal?

  1. It sounds like you have some questions on our foods, we would love to hear from you and help with some feeding tips! Please reach out to our Customer Care team at customercare@championpetfoods.com or 1.877.939.0006

Is this okay for a small breed dog ? Or is the small breed version of orijen better

  1. This diet offers a medium-sized kibble and is appropriate for both small and large dogs!

How do I know how much to feed my dogs?  They are each about 25 lbs.

  1. I have a 20 lbs. Manchester Terrier, I give him 1/2 cup, twice a day.

What is the "natural chicken flavor," and where does it come from (such as the source or process)? Thank you. :)

What are Orijen Original's active ingredients?

where are the 2019 dog & cat Orijen chows being manufactured? Canada or Kentucky plant?

      1. Kentucky as far as the bag tells. Champion petfoods USA DogStar kitchens

What is the calorie count in a cup of Origen Original?

      1. As I recall it is around 3500 per kcal kilo. You can find this information on the packaging or on their website.
