I have been using Instinct Frozen Raw for about 3 years (Buster is 5). Love the product but the price has gotten completely out of control. Corporations have got to stop trying to rip off the consumer. Sorry but enough is enough

Best dog food ever!

My dogs have been eating this food for years and absolutely love it! My older pup(who is now 7 yrs old) won’t go w/o it and is very pouty or refuses to eat if I run out(it is his morning food.) He has loved it since first bite, when he was just out of puppy hood and refused every dry kibble I tried but he instantly started munching it down! He also loves the lamb version and will also eat the polluck one too(he’s not too big into fish.) Our 2 girls also love this food. It might be too pricey to some people (esp. for “ a pet”) but it is worth every penny for their health and happiness! Our vets always rave about how healthy, beautiful and vibrant our puppers are!!

Freezer burnt and smelly

I purchased this because the food I buy is currently back ordered. My mistake, I did not read to see if it was human grade, which is what I normally feed them, but I think the issue is beyond that. It's disgusting. The bag was full of freezer burnt, old, brown, smelly lumps. It was well within the use by date. My two dogs sniffed around it and looked at me like I was out of my mind for even putting it in their bowl. I agree, I shouldn't have. Nothing should eat this. A waste of money

No, I do not recommend this product.

Made my dog sick

I received this as a freebie during my dog’s birthday month, and unfortunately it made my dog vomit several hours after giving her a few pieces (frozen). I’ve given her freeze dried beef liver before as treats, so maybe she just does not tolerate consuming this frozen/raw.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Used To Be Really Good...

I have been using Instinct frozen raw beef and also the pollock for the past few years. My dog used to do really well with this brand but lately she has been getting sick from eating it. She really doesn't want to eat it and she will eat anything! I have switched to another brand of raw and she is feeling much better. I don't know if they have changed the formula or what but I won't be buying Instinct anymore.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Questions

1 - 10 of 12 Questions

What do you do when the whole bag of food is frozen together?

What amount of processing is done to kill potentially harmful bacteria? And based on the level of processing, if any, what amount of risk is there with feeding this to my adult dog?

    1. Hello! Since 2010 we started using a unique process called High Pressure Processing (HPP) on all of our raw and freeze-dried raw food. HPP kills pathogenic bacteria through high-pressure, water-based technology. HPP is a USDA-approved, 100% natural process, and is allowed for use on organic and natural products. There is a WIDE range of operational parameters used in HPP. In our case, the operational parameters are as such that the product is still raw. The temperature of the product doesn’t go above 80 – 90 F . We hold the product at 87,000 psi for 3-5 minutes. We validated the HPP process to ensure that the pathogens are killed, but at the same time we have proven that the naturally occurring enzymes are still active and HPP has minimal effect on the nutritional value (no protein denaturation, no vitamins and minerals are degraded). Pet health and safety has always been our top priority. We believe your pets – and ours – deserve nothing less than superior quality foods. With all of our products, we utilize robust systems to ensure the quality and safety of our foods. Our quality control and quality assurance programs include but are not limited to: Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP’s), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP’s), A Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points (HACCP) Program, Lot Segregation, other human food industry best practices, and High-Pressure Processing (HPP). At every point in the process – from raw material receiving to finished product – there are quality steps and check points. Raw materials and finished products are routinely tested. The manufacturing plant and any warehouses where the product is stored are also inspected on a routine basis. We are confident that we produce high quality, safe products. Please be assured, Instinct has and will continue to enforce only the strictest quality standards in the pet food industry.

Can I mix this with dry unfrozen food?? its a bit expensive and I would like to combo to help

    1. Hello! You can absolutely mix the raw diet in with the kibble if that is your preference. We actually encourage a rotation style diet and this would fit well within that program. You’ll just want to make sure that you continue to follow the raw handling guidelines, as they will still apply, even when mixing raw with kibble. For any other questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at cservice@instinctpetfood.com

Does the food need to be completely thawed? My pup just can not wait, as soon as he hears the bag opening, he is barking and jumping. Does eating the food frozen have a bad effect?

    1. I have been feeding this to my extra large golden doodle and mini schweenie for over a year. they eat only this and I give it completely frozen. They are in excellent health. The Doodle is almost 2 and schweeny is 9. After they eat the little one attacks the giant and they wrestle for half hour at least they have never been so healthy. Frozen RAW and only this, no dry no scraps. Best move you will ever make

Is this suitable for a 2 year old pomsky who weighs around 20-25 pounds? He isn’t overly energetic but he isn’t lazy either.

    1. Hi there! Yes, Raw would certainly be suitable to feed! Thanks!

I have six month old Harness pup. Would this be an appropriate food? Also, description is "sourced from around the world". Where specifically? Lastly, I do not see bone in the ingredients. Is there a recommended way to add bone for small dogs? Thanks

    1. Look up Dog Food Advisor and it shows you how they rate with a full description on why it was rated 4.5 out of 5 stars

How many calories are in a cup?

    1. Hi there! Our Frozen Raw Beef Bites has 183 kcal/cup. Thanks!

Is this food good for puppies? I see the protein is low at 12% my puppy is an 11 week Aussi and my vet said she needs more protein than this. Do you suggest a supplement or different formula for growing puppies?

    1. Hi there! Our Frozen Raw Beef recipe isn't suitable for puppies. For puppies who will weigh under 70lbs as an adult, we recommend using our Frozen or Freeze Dried Raw for Puppies recipe. As for the protein, the percentage shown on the bag is on an as fed basis, which includes moisture. Often the dry matter percentage is used if you are comparing the nutrient contents between different types of food such as Raw and Kibble. The dry matter percentage is essentially the concentrated amount of this nutrient if you were to remove all the moisture from the product. With this in mind, the protein on a dry matter basis is 43%. Hope this helps! https://www.instinctpetfood.com/dogs/raw/instinct-raw-frozen-bites-cage-free-chicken-recipe-puppies

How many cups are in a 6lb bag? The bag only lists its weight but feeding guidelines are given in cups. I need to know how many days' meals are in a bag.

    1. Hello, for our Instinct Raw Frozen Bites there are approximately 4.3 oz. per cup, so the 6lb bag has approximately 22 cups of food in it.

Will this make my dog gassy?

    1. Hello! Unless your pet typically has a sensitive stomach, we would not anticipate digestive upset or excessive gas from eating this food. If they are prone to those issues already, we would recommend looking into our Raw Boost Gut Health recipes!
