Came Here to See if Recipe Changed…I Knew It

I am livid. Our dog can’t have poultry, which is why we’ve been buying this for several years. Our poor dog started having allergic reactions and skin flare ups. We’ve spent a ton on vet bills and medications to no avail. I finally thought to check to see if his food ingredients have changed. Mystery solved. Beyond disappointed. Not to mention we still have two unopened bags that we won’t be using.

I Love This Food.

Not sure why this food has such poor reviews. I've been feeding this for years to multiple dogs and they all do fantastic on it. The price is steep but it's a good staple. Their poop is solid, their coats are soft and shiny, and they've never gotten tired of it.

Extremely Disappointed adding Chicken this food!

Instinct Salmon and brown rice was the one food my that my Wheatens Terriers Loved! Why add Chicken?? Because chicken is cheaper and you can add it as a filler. Why change something that wasn’t broken?? You sure didn’t change the price! So many dogs cannot tolerate chicken and you add it to the food! I have been buying this food for years and it never a cured to me to look at the ingredients until my dogs were biting and scratching like crazy! They were absolutely miserable! I do not like to feed my dogs food without grains! The limited ingredients no corn, no soy, no wheat works best with No Chicken! This is the one food that worked! Had to do my research and switch to a new food. Had to throw away half a 24 lbs bag!

This was one of the few foods without any kind of chicken in it. Very disappointed in the new formulation as my dog has chicken allergies. We won't be buying your products anymore.

Lucy the Corgi

We've been feeding our Corgi this food for a couple years now. It's been best for her. However not happy the ingredients are changed. The 2nd ingredient used to be fish meal and now it's chicken meal. chicken is what we had to get her away from. The bag label on the new Salmon & Brown Rice says 'no chicken' but it has chicken meal.

Terrible new recipe

I purposely switched my dogs to Instincts Be Natural as an affordable option for a food that did not have any chicken contents. The new recipe that came out spring 2025 added chicken meal and chicken fat. With no notice in the change of recipe my dogs became ill and resulted in me needing to change their food yet again.

Why did you add chicken

Jduke

My dog has severe chicken allergies and this food was great for him. I’ve fed this food for years without any problems and now you add chicken and to make it worse, it’s the 2nd ingredient. You could have/should have left the recipe as is for those dogs that needed this food!! So disappointed - you’ve lost my business.

What is the percentage of phosphorus and calcium?

  1. Hello! The percentages on a Dry Matter Basis are as follows: phosphorus 1.1% calcium 1.33%

Is this a grain free dog food?

  1. Hello! Our Be Natural line includes whole grains. Thanks!

Is Instinct Be Natural Salmon & Brown Rice recipe good for a diabetic dog?

  1. Hello! Although our food is formulated to meet all AAFCO nutrient requirements to be complete and balanced for all life stages, it’s not formulated for special needs pets. For pets with special needs, we recommend consulting with your trusted veterinarian to choose the right food. If your vet has certain nutrient requirements, we will be happy to work with them to try to find a good diet for your pet. Thanks!

Is there taurine in this food?

  1. Salmon generally doesn't have a lot of taurine. I'd contact the manufacturer to ask if they add it as I don't see it on the ingredient list. I do feed this to my German Shepherds as part of a rotation. The lamb or chicken formulas likely have more taurine.

My dog is on open feed. Since this is raw, could I leave it out all day?

  1. Hi There, Thanks for your question! The Instinct Be Natural Kibble is shelf stable and can be left out, however, if it is left out too long it may go a bit stale from air exposure. Hope this helps!

Does this have probiotics or prebiotics in the ingredients?

  1. Hi there, thank you for your question! Yes, our Be Natural kibbles contain both prebiotics and probitiocs in their recipes!

Are the bites small enough for a 9 pound Shih Tzu ?  Or is this more for medium-larger dogs ? I realize they sell one for small dogs but prefer these ingredients.  Thank you.

  1. The bites in this product are about 1 centimeter in diameter, so they are still small enough for a 9 pound dog. The small breed recipes are about half the size.
