Methimazole treats hyperthyroidism in cats, a condition in which too much thyroid hormone is produced. It will not cure the disease, but will usually control it if given for the rest of the cat's life. Methimazole may also be used to protect the kidneys in dogs receiving cisplatin, an anti-cancer drug.

Methimazole tablets are geven by mouth. The tablet form is very bitter, and it may be difficult to administer. Use a "pill pocket" treat or hide it in your pet's favorite treat.

My 16 year old cat has been on methimazole for hyper thyroidism. She currently takes 3.75 mg/day. She has been taking it for about 9 months and her dosage started at 2.5 mg/day. Our vet suggests continuing with this therapy indefinitely, but I see some info online that radiotherapy has better results and we could pay for that if it’s substantially better. Looking for a second informed opinion. Does methimazole have any advantages over radiotherapy? Thank you, David
My cat accidentally took my other cats pills. 2.5mg of methimazole and 1.25mg of prednisolone.
Hi! Tony takes methimazole 5mg, 1/2 in the AM and I/2 in the PM and tumil-k tablets, one in the AM and one in the PM.. my question is, how strict are the administration times ... exactly every 12 hours or can it between every 9-12 hours? Thank you!
My cat was diagnosed with hyperthyrodism 4 weeks ago. She was put on 1.0ml of methimasole twice a day. After 3 weeks i took her for blood test. Her thyroid level dropped from 9.0 to 4.1 and blood cell count along with kidney function were within the healthy range. My vet wants to see my cat's thyroid in the 1-2.0 range and increased her dose to 1.25ml twice a day. I worry about future side effects of methimasole. Will surgery be the best option, given she is healthy otherwise and we have 2 cats?
My 11 y/o male cat is taking 12.5 mg of Felimazole a day and now is lethargic, no appetite, but drinks water... Too high of dose possibly?? He seemed fine until a few days ago..
Hi Tony’s methimazole dosage was just increased a few days ago (on Wednesday) because his thyroid levels in his lab work showed an increase from 3 months ago. How long will the increase in dosage take to regulate his thyroid because his appetite is a little off and I wonder if it’s due to this. He also takes 1/8 mrtazapine every day but it doesn’t seem to help the appetite much. Thank you
Where can i bye levotiroxina?
My cat has been prescribed 2.5 mg of Felimazole twice daily for hyperthyroidism. How long does the Felimazole stay active in the cat’s bloodstream? The reason for the question is that when I need to be away from, I have a cat sitter that comes in once a day to tend to the cat. Should she double the dose (5 mg), or stay with a single 2.5 mg pill?
highly concerning side effects suddenly began 11/22/18, after 2 weeks of methimazole (pill) for hyperthyroidism - lethargy, vomiting, face itching, irritability, hiding all day, less frequent bowel movements, bouts of anxiety. He has NOT refused food or water. vet doesn't open for 24 hours, uncertain about the urgency of the situation -- can this wait 24 hours? How normal are these side effects? Are there other side effects I should look for, that warrant immediate emergency care?
My 17 yr old cat has been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. she was started on Methimazole chew treats and now refuses to eat them. I switched to the twist a dose ear Methimazole but if I give that to her daily like the vet suggested, all she does is sleep day and night. It seems to knock her out right after I apply it to her ear. then she starts vomiting her food. I am beginning to think we would be better off going with the radioactive iodine thing. what do you think?
My cat has just started methimazole for high thyroid levels. Since she started this medication, she started coughing periodically. She has had allergies in the past, so I am unsure if she is reacting to the medication, having allergy problems, or if it is something all together separate. I plan on calling the vet on Monday for an appointment. In the meantime, should give her her allergy medication. She has chlorpheniramine for allergies.
Cat diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism. On methimazole but only 3/4 2x/day for 1.5mos. Can't afford to get 3rd blood test to determine dosing cuz just lost my job. His yowling at night is out of control. How can I increase dosage to find proper amount and what signs will I notice when his thyroid is under control?
